Offered demonstrator by dealer until new car arrives!

Post by tartangti »

I ordered my Scirocco back in January. It's allegedly built and scheduled to arrive sometime in the next couple of weeks. The road tax on my car (2006 Golf GTi) runs out on the first of April and it's due an MOT on the 10th. My Dealer phoned me up today saying that even though my car's not there they will loan me a demonstrator Scirocco until my car arrives if I bring in my Golf and leave it with them.

I'm naturally kind of paranoid when a dealer calls you up offerering to do you a favour! It seems like a pretty good deal as it will save me from having to spend a couple of hundred quid getting my car MOT'd/Tax'd for the sake of a couple of weeks before my new one arrives. Obviously I'd keep my V5 registration document until I part-ex my car!

Can anyone see any downsides to me doing this and/or has anyone else done the same thing until their new car arrived?

I px'd my Polo GTI to the dealer 12weeks before my Scirocco arrived, Why the concern?

Did the dealer pay you when you px'd the car or did they just give you the value off the Scirocco when it arrived. Was primarily concerned about leaving the dealer with £12k worth of car and me with nothing to show for it! If they potentially went out of business during that period it would leave me without anything! Don't like the idea of taking the risk.

Car vale was taken off the balance due when the new car arrived. Meant i got a better trade in value than 3months down the line.

Realistically whats the chances of you dealer going down the pan? Very slim i'd have thought.

Don 't do it if you're that concerned

Ask me that question a year ago and I'd agree with you. But with insurance companies, banks, and car manufacturers themselves almost going bust, I would probably be at least a bit concerned!

I remember someone who had a load of hassle when a Rover dealership went bust. He went to chase up with Rover, and they went under too!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've decided just to pay the tax for my car as the garage said they'd refund it when I collect my new one. Don't really want the hassle/stress of leaving my car at the dealers either. My car should be here sometime in the next couple of weeks anyway as I doubt the garage would be willing to loan me a demonstrator if they thought I'd be driving around in it for weeks on end!
