Re: Why No GTI
There was GTI variants of the Mk1 and MK2 but it was dropped in favour of GTX, GT2, Scala and Storm possibly to make the Scirocco seem more upmarket as well as keeping the GTI brand for "hot" hatches

Re: Why No GTI
yeah i suppose, would be nicer being able to explain my car rather than what its called on VW's website as a Scirocco GT 2.0 TSI 210 DSG! haha
Re: Why No GTI
The GTI name seems to be saved exclusivley for the Golf (and puzzlingly also the Polo).....probably contributes to lower Roc insurance premiums though!

Re: Why No GTI
The term GTI doesn't mean so much these days. The "I" stood for fuel Injection at a time when only a few high performance cars on the road had that new technology. That made the Golf GTI stand out from other Golfs and other cars because of its extra power. Whereas today fuel injection is the norm.

Re: Why No GTI
I remember reading many years ago that the "I" didn't actually stand for injection as when the engineers originally knocked up the concept, the car had twin Weber 40 carbs. It was implied the name GTI was agreed before the decision to use the Bosck K-Tronic fuel injection system.ZephyR wrote:The term GTI doesn't mean so much these days. Re: Why No GTI
i suppose it does make up for the lower insurance premium, although i almost bought a 6 month old S3 before i ordered my new roc and the insurance wasn't much different..
