replace my Scirocco ?

Post by garbus »

The contract on my car ends later this year so am already looking into what I can replace it with. Must say this is the best VW I have owned and has been really reliable. Am tempted to replace it with a newer model TSi R but is the current Scirocco model due for a replacement soon ? call it vanity but would rather have the latest version not an outgoing model . Only other alternatives I considered are an A5 coupe or Merc C class (though the cheaper ones are not great performance wise).
Love the diesel engine but guess I could switch to petrol as annual mileage is around 12k. Any suggestions or views ?

Hi looks like you have already made your mind up. unless that was your original order you have left on, but as they say there is a new model coming, and its difficult to get an honest quote from any dealer when its due, and I would have the same mind regarding having an out dated model. I have another year and a bit before I have to do the rounds of dealers again, but have already made up my mind, and it will be a scirocco as its been the best car I have had as an all round package. I will be upgrading to a bigger engine though not because the 122 is lacking for my personal needs, but I now need an automatic.

How about stepping up to the 177bhp TDI? Given the uncertainty of if and when the MkIV will appear I wouldn't hold out for it just yet.

Have you considered;

BMW M135i (faster than a Scirocco R, rear wheel drive & gets mega write ups)
BMW 125i (faster than a Scirocco 2.0 TSI and is a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing)
Toyota GT86 (gets rave reviews)
or wait to see what the new Mk VII Golf GTI and GTD are like (as I am)?
Audi A5 2.0 TDI 177bhp (lovey looks and great fuel econ but pricy new for S-Line spec)

Just my two penneth.

Stick with a Scirocco Mk.3 - I think it will be some time before its seen as the 'out-going' model. This effect will even be some time away once a new model is eventually introduced as its a low volume type and the new version will take much longer to be established than say the Golf VII.

cheers for all the replies, guess it's a hard act to follow. Was considering the Toyota/ Subaru but is it just me , looks kind of dated already. Reminds me a bit of an old Celica and the Lexus style rear lights don't help. Gonna look at some Audis , running costs are a bit higher and have heard a few issues on A4 / TT reliability so not sure how A5's fare. Still got a few months so will do some checking out of dealerships.

Audi = nice cars but poor value for money!
BMW 1 Series - rear wheel drive (great in summer, not so great in Winter!!)
Mercedes - have you seen the interiors of some of the current models?

In the same situation myself. Time for a new motor but not sure what. I’d get another Roc, move up to a 2.0 TSi, but even then it would look just the same when I'm sat inside it.
TT would be good but if I'm going to have 4 seats then they need to be 4 proper seats, and the boot is too small for what I need.
Thought about the A5 but I've heard the user experience doesn't match its good looks.
A3 – we maybe but apart from the convertible it looks so boring, and I really don’t want a rag top..
Could not bring myself to buy a BMW 1 series …… regardless.
The A class Merc looks good especially in the Sport or AMG spec but when I sat in side it felt big and clumsy and the rear view was worse than the Roc. Also the cost of Merc servicing makes me eyes water.
So I started looking at some 2 seater roadsters etc. like the GT86 but I find I am paying as much for a decent spec roadster as I am for a 2.0 Roc but with less room inside, less boot space, inferior performance, worse mpg and higher insurance.
So its back to the Roc.

I'm in exactly the same situation as you, same scirocco too. I've searched and searched and researched and researched but still can't come up with another new car quite like the scirocco.

What is your aversion to the 1 Series? A fine set of engines to choose from. Good rear seats. Hatchback and rear wheel drive. Is it just the looks. If it is I think it looks best in 3 door form and M Sport trim.

As I say I just can't find anything that looks as great as the scirocco does, with the practicality it possesses.

On the quiet I'm waiting to see what the new Golf GTI/GTD looks like in three door form (I did see the concept cars in the press a few months back and I thought it looked great as a white 3 door). And waiting to see what pricing / spec VW will offer on UK versions.

Other than that... I'm stumped.

Same boat here guys. My current thinking is the 135i, new Audi S3 or hold out for the new Golf GTI. Decisions...

I've just been through what all you guys are talking about. My last five cars have all been VW Golf GT TDI and had been holding back since Oct 12 (car was 3 years old) waitin for the new Golf to arrive. Saw it in the flesh, test drove an SE model and was desperately disappointed! You hardly noticed the difference and the five door is just too much of a family car and looked really bland. It's loaded with lots of hi tech equipment in the GT guise but just lost its appeal to me even in the candy white , three door with the 18" black option wheels.

I looked at the Mercedes A Class AMG Sport and looked really enticing especially in white again with the black AMG alloys. However I believe it is a Renult diesel engine that is fitted and the interior resembled cheap french car with the quality of materials. I could live with it if it had the interior fitted out by VW.

Test drove the new Audi A3 Sport but you have to pay so much more to get what comes as standard in the equivilent VW model.

So in the end I opted for a VW Scirocco R Line in Indum Grey TDI Bluemotion with parking sensors and cruise control. Best decision I have made - the car just ooozes style few othe rcars in this price range can't match! My 12 year old sone thinks it is te dogs bollo@cks and he knows his cars.

So I would recommend replacing your Scirocco with another Scirocco!

Definatly get another scirocco is my advice, Ive heard no plans of a model change in the motoring press just a few spec upgrades in 2013 possibly middle of the year. I got a 1.4 122, but speced up to be a GT best car ive owned, if I change it, It will be a 2.0 either petrol or diesel 170 in Grey.
