GT 170. MPG

Well I deffo made the wrong decision then to get a 140. Should have got a 170 as not only is it quicker, but it seems its more economical as well.

My 140 DSG with approx 14k miles only ever really averages mid forties on my regular commute, even though the MFD always indicates just over 51-53 mpg. My journey consists of 11 miles to work through town on standard 30 and 40 mph roads. To be honest my old MK5 Golf with the older PD engine did better. Don't know if its the DSG in the Rocco that's sapping a good 4-5 mpg ?

Did once have nearly 80 mpg on a run back from London at a very steady 75 on CC which actually worked out to a very respectable 74.6 mpg (calculated on the full up), but that's been very much a one off !

Yep, cold weather, longer warm-up and at least a 5 mpg reduction over an 11 mile commute (58-60mpg on the MFD in the summer, 50 - 54 this morning)

lucky you , your getting 8- 10 mpg more than me summer and winter over 11 mile commute too

I would love to be getting 60 mpg! My average is between 47 and 49 mpg, sometimes I am lucky enough to get 50 but that's the exception rather than the rule.

Still, if I wanted excellent fuel economy I would have bought a 1.0 litre Fiesta.

Its not the car its your commute, town driving kills MPG it in a big way. On my mainly motorway commute if its clear traffic and the summer I can break 60mpg. If there is a couple of hold ups it drops to low 50s, if there is a couple of hold ups and its winter then mid 40s is more likely.
You only have to stop and start a handful of times to knock 10mpg off your average particularly if your trip is short (which yours is) as its far less economical if the engine is not fully warm.

Yeah, always new really that it was my typical journeys, which was realised by the fact that on a good run, it can achieve really good figures.

TBH, I didn't want another Diesel when I purchased the Rocco, not that I don't like them, I do, big time, it's just that my 8-9K a year never really warranted one. Problem was, in GT spec (which is what I wanted), I only had the choice of the 2 Diesels or the 2 ltr Turbo Petrol, and I wanted something a little more economical than that. If either of the 2 - 1.4 TSI engines had been available in GT spec (either the 122 or 160 versions), I'd probably had gone for one of them ( and saved a little money on purchase price to boot) !

Your 11 mile commute is hardly enough to warm the engine up in winter. My wife takes our dog for a walk in the local country park which is eight miles away. I went with her a couple of times last week, oil temp barely reached 80C and the trip showed a mere 41.3 mpg, although we are climbing throughout the journey. But a motorway journey still got a reading of 54 mpg.

Just picked my 170 up yesterday. Drove it back from London to Norfolk and averaged 46mpg on the 150 mile trip, with a bit of slow traffic and some steady motorway miles. Today I went for a 50 mile round local trip and never really got over 70mph with only a small bit in the town, the rest was 50 - 60 mph and only got average of 45mpg per the MFD - my Golf GTI usually averaged 36mpg on the same trip.

Do you reckon this is about right as I was expecting at least 50mpg on these type of trips?

There must be something wrong with my car as I find it hard to get it to average less than 50mpg on any run it gets up to temperature.

if it was really cold you can easily loose 10mpg, it will be better when the weather warms up.

What are you getting from yours at the minute as I see you have a 170 dsg. Plus do you use any specific diesel? Someone mentioned that ultra is better but not used it before as always had petrol cars until now and weather hadn't really made much difference.

Agreed - my commute is a fairly restrained journey as it is largely B-roads with few sensible places for overtaking. Oil temp usually gets there by mile 9 or 10 in the winter so I tend to drive gently to cover engine wear concerns. Summer was a lot better with quicker warm-up and therefore able to "make progress" that much sooner.

I don't have much mileage in town traffic which is a big help to the overall reading.

When I have had the car on a decent run (eg mid-Cornwall to Bristol 160 miles) I have been getting 55mpg plus on the MFD but that was with being very good on the motorway / dual carriageway. Nearly got 60 mpg once on that trip in the Summer but I caveat that with a "I was running 15 mins early so I eased off for the last ten minutes" .....

Some cross-county trips (mix of A & B roads, occasional dual carriageway) can yield 55 - 60 on the MFD. Car is coming up to 30,000 miles and I must find time to work out total "real" mpg based on fuel refill tickets.

Didn't buy the Scirocco to be a mobile roadblock, honest ! !

I filled up with Shell V Power once, by mistake. Nearly had a fit when I had to pay for it. That was at the end of March last year when we had really warm weather (it did turn out to be our summer in fact). I did a few long runs on the tank, mixed roads, which was usual for me and I didn't see any difference whatsoever. Total waste of money.

I use Shell V Power all the time, it's only about 6p more round here, so about £3 a tank. With the amount of money we pay in fuel anyway it gets lost in the noise. Does it make my mpg any better? I think it does, but others say no. I can't prove it though.

My TDI 170 has 9000 miles on it and I haven't a clue what mpg it does. Whenever I put my foot down I know it's not going to break me. It's a 2.0 Diesel.

Just realised you had already posted your MPG earlier in the thread!

Looks like my 45mpg isn't that great, although it was in the cold so will expect an improvement in the warmer weather - thanks for the heads up on that.

I have been out again and clocked an average 41mpg over a 26 mile trip on mixed A & B roads so I had a word with my local VW specialist (not a main dealer) and he said it might be over fueling. I am thinking of getting him to run a diagnostic check and then depending on the result go back to the garage I bought it from as they said I should get much better economy than my GTI and the weather is a bit warmer than last week. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on over fueling. Also how would I know if the DPF was playing up as I have heard that can cause a drop in MPG - the DPF light is not on and I didn't think to ask when I spoke to the garage earlier.

Have to agree with that, have managed 37.2 on a trip but that was in Germany lol (not doing that again soon)

That does seem a little low but not I've seen similar and lower on occasions. If there isn't a problem then its all down to the roads and driving style.

Just out of interest do you live in a particularly hilly area?
on my commute home I have 1 long hill I go up for about a mile. If I'm heavy with my right foot I can loose nearly 1 mpg on my overall average for that 1 mile in a 30 mile trip. This would be even worse if the engine was still cold...

No hills involved where I live in Norfolk - been told that the computer settings are out though so that might be why. Been advised to record a couple of fill ups and see what I am actually getting as it looks like the MFD is wrong and will get it reset.
