Bluetooth Music

Post by y8s »

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a used Scirocco (probably 2010 or 2011)- is there an easy way to tell which ones are able to play music from my phone via Bluetooth? i.e. which Entertainment Systems can do this?

What is the bluetooth sound quality like?

Can you skip tracks, pause etc from the steering wheel?

Cheers,

John

Cars ordered after 2011 have the bluetooth module as standard, prior to that it was an option.

The bluetooth module resides below the driver's seat and sorry I don't know how easy it is to tell from the head unit if the car has one fitted as my car has one fitted and I have not been in a Scirocco without it to know if the "phone" button is standard on the unit or whether it's just there if it is fitted. Others will advide. There is also a phone menu on the MFD, so that could be another way to tell.

Bluetooth audio quality is OK and yes you can control from MFSW.

To be honest, i never use bluetooth to play music as I just plug my phone into the MDI in the armrest which takes iPod, iPhone or USB stick. Much better quality and more control

Thanks for the advice,

I have an android phone and would prefer the wireless connection.

I have seen this car on Autotrader which is pretty close to what I want (no pan roof though)
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... gcode=visc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It is listed as having the following:
RCD510 TOUCH SCREEN RADIO
Multi function steering wheel

If it does not have the bluetooth option would VW be able to factory retrofit it?

Cheers,

John

I have an android phone too and just connect through USB.

Yes, the bluetooth module can be retrofitted.

I bought my 2010 GT last week from a trader. I thought that because the RCD 510 has the 'Phone' button and the fact that you could switch the BT Audio to 'on' in the Media settings that the car had bluetooth. After much searching it seemed not! the next day I had Vag-Tec out to the house to retro fit the genuine BT Module (placed behind the radio unit and A/C panel) and Microphone in centre headlining console. Some settings changed throught the diagnostic port and the job was done. Bluetooth Phone and Music with all the functionality you would expect as if it was original.

And the price you ask? £349 (+VAT) for card payments. Well worth it in my opinion. The Phone quality is far superior to a retro fit Bury from a dealer (I have one in our Passat).

My 59 (MY2010) car has the factory fitted premium Bluetooth kit. Sits underneath the drivers seat. It supports remote SIM for Nokia phones but not much else, and will not support Bluetooth audio. It's good if you have a compatible phone but useless if you don't. Hence why I believe later models had a different (more conventional) Bluetooth module. The manuals supplied with my car were for MY2009 so a lot of the correct information was lacking regarding the updated steering wheel controls, MFD and phone kit. After trying to get Bluetooth audio working with a number of devices I found a one liner in the manual that stated it was not compatible with the phone prep for the vehicle. I use the USB connection to the MDI in the centre console for my music with a tiny Samsung S1 mini HDD. Stores all my music but cannot use 'shuffle' which I can only use with an iPod as I guess it's a built in function of the music player rather than the RCD510 head unit. Hope this info is of assistance.

Just to vonfirm early OEM Bluetooth modules only supported rSAP, which as said above, is only old Nokia Phones. Later ones support HFP which means they support modern phones and BT Audio.

Thanks for the information. Just looking at Vag-Tec website now - looks like they can add pretty much anything?
http://www.vag-tec.com/vw/scirocco" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If I can buy a 2010 GT and pay £400ish for bluetooth phone calls and bluetooth music which can be controlled via the steering wheel then that looks like a good option.

I'm glad the Vag-tec info was of use. My advice would be to confirm the exact spec of the media system in the car you are looking to buy. There seem to be different versions of the RCD 510 system. Ignatz at vag-tec is very knowledgable and will be able to tell you what functionality you will get from a specific headunit. I picked up a 2012 Golf as a loan car today (problem with my Passat!! - Passenger side doors wont open) and the functionality I have for phone and BT music in my Roc is exactly the same as the Golf. As with some of the others who have posted, I don't tend to use the BT music as I've got the armrest ipod connection, but when I have had a play with it, I have found that you first need to start playing a track on the phone (iphone4s in my case) and then the headunit recognises the phone and the tunes can be heard thru the headunit and car speakers - but no functionality to track/album/playlist change etc. However it is clever enough to pause the music if the phone rings!!

If you want functionality thru headunit for music my advice would be to make sure the car has the MDI option (armrest USB or IPOD connection - interchangable).

In my opinion Bluetooth AD2P sound quality is much much worse than from MDI in armrest or SD Card.
