scirocco r Vs Scirocco GT 210

Post by Terryrussell1952 »

I have a GT DSG, an excellent car, averaging about 35mpg with great performance, I bought it as an ex demonstrator and am considering changing to a scirocc r DSG. Those of you that have the r, can you let me know realistically what mpg I'll get and the differences in driving etc. Of course I'll drive one before finally deciding. Any advice greatly appreciated. I have recently moved from a revo remaped manual gt to a dsg R. With the gt I would normally get around 30-35mpg but only get about 20-25mpg with the r.

The R feels like a completely different car to the gt. If you can live with the mpg you won't regret it.

Pretty much as Jonny really, though you can get late 20's quite easily if driving frugally.

Same as the above. Not as good mpg in the R, but totally different to drive. The DSG is very good to.

Thanks for the replies, this is really helpful, I'll update when I take it further, I'm a bit hooked on the scirocco having had many VWs in the past and will have a good think. Tanks to all. Terry

Getting roughly 27mpg with mine at the moment. As above you won't regret it at all, different driving experience which did surprise me at first, I love it.

Both are great cars but my one question is in terms of value for money certainly when purchased from new:
- the R costs around £6.0k more than the GT (What Car target prices)
- the R is only 0.9 seconds quicker to 60 mph (official VW figures)
- the trim levels are pretty similar eg leather + sat nav
On the other hand, due to early depreciation, the R is now starting to look a very good used buy.

Having tried both and gone with the R, I'd say the GT is great, really good, but the R is just another level again.

But is it right for you? If you're asking about MPG then it starts to suggest not. Sure you can get high 20's, low 30's.... but that's not really the point of it. If the difference makes the difference to you it's probably the wrong car.

And to go further... how are you likely to use it? As other have said, trim etc is pretty much as per the GT. So if 99% of your time is spent at a steady cruise on the motorway, or nose to tail in congested commuting.... then you may as well get the GT.

The R is really happy with the turbo spinning and making a break for the horizon. That's nothing something you want to play with in stop start commuter traffic, and not something you'll make much use of with the CC on cruising in the middle lane.

Only you can make the right choice, but I hope the above illustrates that it's a bit deeper than hoe many MPG, what price and what spec... the drive is something to carefully consider too.

Good luck!

Mine's a manual, and I mostly drive in open country in Northumberland - so avoiding urban traffic etc. I've kept a precise log since new and it's a shade under 34 mpg after 16k miles, so rather better than most other replies. But like everyone says, it's a blast, so go for it.

Whoops, should have been clear I was talking about an 'R' getting nearly 34mpg.
