Chassis notch ??
Hi guys,, anyone notched there chassis leg on here..
I'm running H&R ultra lows around 80mm down and and getting sick of the shaft banging on the leg so a notch is my only option..
Had a quick look today and it looks like the plastic fuel lines run down through the chassis leg near to where the welding needs to be done..
Just wondering if anyone had done a notch and had taken the fuel lines out and how easy it was..
Thanks..

Re: Chassis notch ??
As posted already, that's a link to my build thread, I got a notch about a month ago when my Air Struts went on.
He never had to move any fuel lines as far as I know, just took off all the under trays n that, then used a holesaw to cut through and a really small cutting disc to get the shape he wanted then fabricated some metal and welded it in.
Most folk say I'm daft for doing it to a brand new car, but I'm no gonna spend all that money on air ride and have it sitting higher than it could sit if I notched it.

Re: Chassis notch ??
Cheers for the reply.. The lad who is doing mine also notched my mk4 golf and did a great job but the fuel lines didn't pass through the leg on that..
Taking the fuel lines out while the welding is done is only a precoursion just in case any of the weld flash melts one of the lines.. Also thought of wrapping them up in a piece of fire blanket to save taking the fuel lines out..
It is going in this weekend for the work so I will put a few pics up on here once it's been done..
Why would people think you were daft for doing it.. It's not going to weaken the chassis or cause any other problems once the new metal is welded in..

Re: Chassis notch ??
Yes, it will. Any break or cut into a straight edge will cause a weak point with a tendency to fatigue, particularly in a stressed, flexing load bearing beam. Welding additional metal in will reintroduce some strength, but of course the new metal will have to follow the shape of the notched beam so will have exactly the same inherent weakness. It's perfectly possible with great care, to reinforce the notch in such a way that it will successfully resist any fatigue induced crack from starting and propagating, but it;s not a risk I'd take with £20k+ of car and I'm not entirely sure many insurance companies would either without a significant premium hike.W11LVW wrote: Why would people think you were daft for doing it.. Re: Chassis notch ??
Do you not think you are thinking into this to much ??
I ran a notch on my mk4 golf for years with no issues and know of loads of other people who also have had no bother.. In fact iv never heard of notch causing anyone any problems..

Re: Chassis notch ??
Notches are a ludicrously stupid idea. Purposefully introducing faults into metal... companies spend millions on equipment to identify faults in metal construct and they discard or recycle if any are found.
Welding a small piece of metal to support the fault? I guess engineering isn't a strong point of whoever is doing this?
Too many cowboys in the world of car mods.

if you have a 2,0, a 2-pc driveshaft is a better idea
