thinking of a change... opinions needed!
sooooo...
i know i don't post on here often apart from ages ago but this forum has been a valuable source of information for me for when i was making mods to my scirocco, and im a believer in documenting everything on the net so as to help those who come behind you
I was considering an upgrade form my TSI 2.0 to an R but it seemed stupid so i thought i'd look a bit more out of the box.
long story short here is my options have boiled down to.
a Camaro £35k in yellow (NEW)- this appeals to me cuz i love the design and its a bit of a rarity to see one on the streets.
however during the test drive it really was noticeably heavy and the MPG is horrendous .....
but it doesn't take away that the design is still striking and a real head turner - and im sure i could get used to the extra weight so i wouldn't discount it on those grounds
a 2nd Hand Cayman R £37k in green - pros are obvious / cons are .... 37k for a 2nd hand car..
a 2nd Hand Cayman S <30k - cheaper than the R and probably more practical .. not in the green but still looks great in white
and i would prob get the nice r decal up the side after, along with black wheels etc.
so what do you guys think on the above cars? which one wins, (not basing it purely on performance, because obviously the cayman would win that) but consider all things.

As much as I like the look of proper US muscle cars and would love a meaty big V8, there are just too many big fun corners in the UK and I'd get hacked off every time I tried to go round one. I'd rather have a Jag XF-R if I wanted a big V8 cos that does corners.

Re: thinking of a change... opinions needed!
The handling was actually alright on the camaro - granted the test drive was just up and down the motorway but whn it got the corners I didn't feel like it was having a problem getting round them

Nissan GTR? For under £40k it'll be second hand, prob on a 59 or 60 plate but the things are pretty much bullet-proof.

Yeh another friend recommended it but is a bit much for me . Not a massive fan of the styling . And the stock exhaust sounds a bit too boy racer IMHO

Camaro or the white Cayman.
Re: thinking of a change... opinions needed!
cayman r as a futrue classic
Golf 7R - Golf 7R - BMW M2
Re: thinking of a change... opinions needed!
a vote for all 3 then - this isn't helping my decision making process at all
a cayman s with side decal would prob be the most sensible cayman to buy, so its prob a toss up between that and a camaro then
i was at one stage considering a 370z gt edition also

Re: thinking of a change... opinions needed!
Definitely Cayman over Camaro.
Big and heavy gets dull after a while, I had a 350z for a bit and although it handled brilliantly it always felt heavy and I never really enjoyed it.
£30K + gets you a lot of car though. Why a cayman over a 911? You could get a vantage for that sort of money...

Or if it was my money I think I would be looking at Evoras

Or something a little more leftfield... Maser GT

prefer the shape of a cayman tbhgoatboy wrote:Definitely Cayman over Camaro.

i do like the vantage - although it seems pretty impossible to pick up a white one for sub 40k.
wasn't aware of those other 2, any other cars you can think of. not a fan of the lotus - reminds me of the gtr.
Re: thinking of a change... opinions needed!
How about an Evora S?
That would tick many of the same boxes and they are lovely to both look at and drive

Re: thinking of a change... opinions needed!
cayman r is future classic and will run all day long, masser GT is really overrated when going point to point
oddly i had a similar dilemma and all failed on the luggage space for two weeks touring europe so bottled it and went for the Ed35, all be it spent £2k sorting out the handling (hence why I know a masser is over rated)

Well i can speak from test driving both. I test drove the cayman s (not the r) found it a bit slow. Handling and built quality def go to the porsche, on the other hand practicality and comfort id give a slight edge to the camaro.
I was wondering why dont you consider waiting a bit for the golf mk7 gti/r, merc a45amg/cla, and audi s3 (2013). From the choices you put up it seems you'd want to have a coupe, well audi and vw come as coupe's if wanted as well as 5 doors. If it was up to me i would wait a bit for the golf mk7r or a45amg.....wait lets throw in the s3 as well. Damn you 2013 too many nice models to pick from

Re: thinking of a change... opinions needed!
Well while the Camaro offer you a very tempting 432 PS and a massive 569.0 Nm torque the urban MPG figure of 13.5 would put me straight off. That's their laboratory figure so you can expect to get less than that, possibly 10mpg around town
On top of that insurance will be heavy, road tax will be more and go knows what servicing costs will be like - assuming you can find a dealer near you .....
http://www.chevrolet.co.uk/contact/find ... ry=m23+4rt You need to extend the search for Camaro dealers to find the 6 UK dealers - 4 of whom are in the south east.
Don't know what the 2nd hand values would be like - they might be a pleasant surprise

Re: thinking of a change... opinions needed!
have owned a golf before so not really interested in another one, - the a45 did appeal to me briefly but have gone off the shape since and never been a fan of the audi shape.raffoul232 wrote:Well i can speak from test driving both. have never considered the boxter until now tbh, i could be tempted by a (new) one of them

the camaro does seem like a good deal at the start, but after you consider the MPG, Tax + Insurance, the running costs do go up. not to mention when you have to replace those MASSIVE tires.

Re: thinking of a change... opinions needed!
How's this for a curveball. How about a BMW M1 Coupe? Or a classic M3 CSL.
However if it were my money (which is easy to say) I'd have the Cayman R. Supposed to be a 5 star classic!
I'm changing myself soon but sadly I don't have your kinda cash
Enjoy

I assume you mean the 1M as it's been a while since they made any M1s. As I understand it all the new ones have been sold but there might be the odd one kicking about the dealer network.Gary_Monkey wrote:How's this for a curveball. How about a BMW M1 Coupe?

Yeah I mant the 1M. It was early when I wrote it this morning ;-)
I know all new are sold out but there are likely to be a few knocking around on Pistonheads.
