Re: 2012 F1 topic
Yeah kind of surprising and not all at the same time.
Perez also confirmed at McLaren. That's a great move for him.
I think Hamilton just wanted out of McLaren and Merc was realistically the only place he could go. But if he wants to win races, he's in for a season of mid grid mediocrity there next year I think. He's probably pinning all his hopes on the 2014 spec change as being a major step up for Merc. I think he'll regret it and he'll spend all of next year being asked, 'so are you sure the move to Mercedes was the right choice?'.
Sauber could do worse than take on Schumacher......

Schumacher is retiring (again) Bernie let the cat out of the bag the other week with the BBC boys
(also sad to see Jake go from the BBC coverage but he & his wife deserve some family time after an amazing few years)

Jake is going up bbc vision to head up the football so not much time away. If the beep keep him I'm sure we'll see him doing a lot more as he is the new face for bbc.
Bernie knew what was happening as he needs to know who is in and who he'll let the teams use

Re: 2012 F1 topic
I think losing Jake will be a blow for the BBC. I heard he 'only' gets £250k/year and was more than a bit miffed that Alan Shearer gets 10x that! I wonder too if he knows/suspects that the BBC might lose its live coverage and that's what he really likes doing. If they just go to highlights next year it probably won't be as much fun to do. But as he's about to become a daddy I doubt travelling the world every fortnight sat well with his wife

Ecclestone: 'New engines could be scrapped'
The new engine formula planned for 2014 and beyond may very well be scrapped, according to Bernie Ecclestone who strongly opposes the change.
Plans are currently in place to replace the current 2.4 litre V8 engines with 1.6 litre turbo-charged V6 engines in a bid to improve the sports environmental image.
The revelation comes after Ecclestone attended a fire-up of the new engine, which are currently under development by Ferrari, Renault and Mercedes.
"I listened to the noise of the engines in Maranello the other day, the new engine and the old engine, and even Luca di Montezemolo (Ferrari Chairman) said it sounded terrible and didn't like it," Christian Sylt quotes the 81-year-old as saying.
Ecclestone is confident that FIA president Jean Todt and Di Montezemolo will agree to at least delaying the engines which have spiralled in cost, despite F1 entering a budget reducing era.
"[Todt] will get rid of it," he said, adding: "I think Luca is also saying we should suspend it for two or three years. I think it is sensible to get rid of it and stick with what we have got. It is much cheaper than the new one. It probably could be 30% of the price."
This will be a blow for Mercedes/Lewis as that was one of there hopeful spins that the new regs would work for them

Re: 2012 F1 topic
I think the teams have already invested too much money to scrap them but by all accounts they need to make them sound better. At the moment they don't sound very F1-ish.

I think right now is the lowest of the low. They already have done a lot for reducing carbon footrpint, where does it stop? 20 mechanics in a box at the back peddling? A cross over from Tour-de-France? lol

Re: 2012 F1 topic
They just needed someone to fill a 1 year gap till Vettel is available so I guess it's the easy option.

I would of taken anyone buy him. Someone from a lower formulae even. Stabber Sutil, Maybe even Senna on a years loan kept quiet. I'm sure there's a hundred options... but... Massa!?!?

Re: 2012 F1 topic
Easy option for them though. They don't have to change anything and he knows his place.
Others might have been reluctant to take a 1 year deal as it might have left them out in the cold for the 2014 seat changes.

I know, I know and he's established etc. But given the chance, I dare say they had a plethora of options.Kev wrote:Easy option for them though. They don't have to change anything and he knows his place.
