ESP Fault

Post by andyd68 »

I've had an 'ESP Fault' message come up on the MFD the last couple of mornings when I've switched on the car first thing.

Any clues to what 's causing it or should I just run the car up to dealer and get them to check it out?

Thanks

I get this occasionally too. However it all started after I had had the car REVO'ed. When the inital 'flash' of the ECU was done, it brought up an ESP fault at the time which the REVO guys said was normal as the ESP system was unable to communicate with the ECU (as the memory had been erased to make way for the REVO coding). All fault codes were cleared using VAGCOM/VCDS, and all was good. I've since been back to the REVO dealer for another issue, and they have checked the fault code logs, which are always completely clear. So the ESP fault which flashes up occasionally (randomly it seems) is not being stored in memory :?

Car just back from dealer. No ESP fault according to diagnostics and no fault codes stored in the memory. I have to monitor the situation. Even the workshop manager was at a loss as to what would cause the message to come up. Just as an aside he seemed a decent guy and was genuinely interestered in cars and the VW brand. Also spoke to the salesman who sold me the car and he was interested to know if the problem had been resolved.

I have been getting these ESP Fault messages recently, once in about a month. I start the car, the message is displayed on the MFD and in 3 sec it is gone. 'Tested' the ESP last week and it seems to work fine. Has anyone got more info on this of lately?

Can you get hold of VCDS (VAGCOM) to check for the Brake Controller 03? Either a screen shot of the Controller's "Open Controllers" screen or a Controller 03 section from the Autoscan, if you can post that up.

Plus, still the 2009 Scirocco you bought?

I would try find VCDS and take the screenshots.

It showed up this morning again - strange, it is as if the car has recorded the error at shut down. If the problem is at startup, you would think the message would flash and stay for a while. I sometimes get a seatbelt warning upon startup when the previous night I have parked the car without a seatbelt on. Still, it is not normal!

It is the same 2009 model - it's 3 years and 17 days old. No warranty!

Hmm just found this.

Car is in limp mode for 2nd time in 2 weeks with same ESP fault message on dashboard

Got the EPC, ESP and TPMS lights lit up. Came up with Throttle Angle Sensor fault on VCDS.

1 week left on warranty. Do I let the dealer try fixing this??

Check the wiring around the throttle body. Rectangular alloy box below the inlet manifold to the passenger side of the oil dip stick. Two electrical connections. One on top of the throttle body ("alloy box") and one to the passenger side lower front face. Pay particular attention to the lower front connection. You are looking for an insecure/damaged wire, possibly shorting on metal.

Also check the throttle pedal wires as above.

If OK, then dealers as its not usual for an R, and you need to register the fault before the warranty runs out.

Thing is the manifold was removed few weeks ago to carry out injector replacement so not sure if the sensor on the TB was inadvertently nudged etc

I will take a look in the morning anyway. Ran fine last week after the code was cleared. It was boosting again on my way to AKS. He drove it for 10 mins and it was fine.

Any idea how much that sensor is? Can u buy it separately from the flap motor or is it all 1 piece?

Throttle body and senors are supplied as one. Part no. 06F 133 062Q.

Did VCDS give which sensor reference? G186, G187 or G188?
Can point you to the exact wires which need to be checked in detail. Still think its a intermitant wire contact.

They may have pulled a wire back slightly out of the loom connection side or damaged it enoungh to break the copper wires internally, in which case you will be looking for stretched or creased insulation tomorrow morning.

And once found you may need to re-adapt the Throttle Body/Engine ECU with VCDS after fixing.

Didn't note down which G number as cleared the code first but did see it said throttle angle sensor fault.

Alex checked the pedal potentiometer and that seemed to read ok on VCDS and he said its possible the TB is on way out. TB was re adapted before I left and it's been ok. Both times it has happened when giving large dollop of throttle and boost.

Will go see Alex tomorrow hopefully.

Throttle Valve Drive - G186 - Violet feed and Brown with Violet stripe return.

Angle Sender 1- G187 - Black with Blue stripe feed (same wire as G188), Violet with Brown stripe return (same wire as G188).
Green with Yellow stripe for position reading.

Angle Sender 2 - G188 - Black with Blue stripe feed (same wire as G187), Violet with Brown stripe return (same wire as G187).
Blue with Green stripe for position reading.

If it was only a single sensor number reported, then the G187/G188 common wires above are not at fault.

Take the plug off and makes sure all the pins are fully home and evenly visible as you look into the connector.

Had a quick look this morning and all wires and connections look ok

Noticed the part no. Rev is J tho! Ur number above is Rev Q!

All 3 lights have gone out this morning after drive to work and boosting again. But don't like the fact it might go limp mode during an overtake move :(

"J" is an old part. They now fit Q as a replacement part on from 2009 onwards.

If wires are OK, then its looking like a new Throttle Body.

Find it strange to happen after some work has been done in the area. The only thing that comes to mind is a forced throttle while off the engine or throttle wasn't properly adapted. So just hold off TB change and see if it occurs again first.

Angle sensor 2 - G188 is whats been logged

Off to the dealer it is to see if they can do it under goodwill as warranty only just ran out.

Part can be sourced at cheaper price so bit happier if I need to pay whole lot myself

Well it's out of warranty but my SMT plan still has 2 days to go! Waiting for green light from VWFS now.

Throttle pedal is at fault apparently as they've seen this a few times on Sciroccos. So that will be replaced if it gets the ok. :)
