Up to about 600 miles I stuck to recommendations. But done various journeys using different roads, all the gears going up to about 3500rpm, and sometimes 4000rpm. After then, I just gradually increased up to 5000 rpm after longer journeys etc... get the idea. Over 1000miles I just drove as I wanted, I still never push it over 3000rpm until its above 70c. At 3500 miles I done a track day and everything got a good run (oil to 120c, 2 tanks of V power...). 5000 ish miles needed about 1/2 litre oil.

Not so important to run in engines these days but for the first 1,000 miles just don't rev it too much or let it labour and after 500 miles gradually increase revs and load.

Hi, I've always "run in" every new car I've had. Depending on how much I like the car depended on how long the run in period was. Most were around the 5000 mile mark, but the Roc is ( to me ) a stunning beast and as such the run in period was 7000 miles.I never hit 3000 rpm till 2000 miles and very slowly increased the rpm to 4000 up to 5000 miles, always going easy on the boot. Between 5000 and 7000 miles I increased the rate of acceleration. Many will say this was well over the top, many will think I'm mad, but I always think of the long term and firmly believe it pays dividends in the end. At 80 mph it returns 55 mpg and at 90 mph returns 48 mpg, something I can't help but be chuffed to "Roc's" with

VW's recommendations are in the Scirocco owner's Booklet 3.2. Don't forget its more than just the engine.... got the brakes to bed in, tyres to scrub and the gearbox.

I personally took mine into the Derbyshire Pennines and drove it gently upto 3,000 rpm, driving up and overrun coasting down sloping roads until I could feel the engine braking working on the overruns. That took a run of 250 miles to do. Then kept the engine below 3,000rpm until 1,500 miles. After that, wound it up gradually to red line levels between 1,500 - 2,000 miles. After that...... gone. Don't change the engine oil early as its designed to aid running-in which won't finally settle until 5,000 - 10,000 miles. So leave the factory oil in until the first service.

Tyres should scrub enough inside about 300 miles.

Brakes can be upto 1,000 miles to settle, depending on your braking techniques. Be aware that until the brakes are bedded in, some funny steering will happen when braking at high speed due to the ESP kicking in. Typical scenario is braking on the slip road coming off a M/way at speeds above 50mph. The Scirocco can serve as the braking is applied which can be unnerving as its not expected. This effect will go when the brakes are bedded in. Just brake normally while bedding in.

Hey RW1 appreciate the detailed response.

I read some where the diesel engines need to be thrashed first time round. So I have been driving like normal but past few days I have actually been red lining. today its upto 700miles. my breaking is at times very hard.. but now that I know I am actually supposed to inbed by breaks also il be keeping things gentle.

I hope I havent been damaging my engine or breaks lol
