Sorry not sure which sensor to check. Best to do a full scan with VCDS and check which fault codes is generated. Once you got the code then you can check the ross-tech wiki for more info. Maybe a worn diverter valve?not sure if they improved this in R, but i know i had that problem in my MK5 GTI and have some mates who had the same problem in the MK6 GTI.
