Notches are a ludicrously stupid idea. Purposefully introducing faults into metal... companies spend millions on equipment to identify faults in metal construct and they discard or recycle if any are found. Welding a small piece of metal to support the fault? I guess engineering isn't a strong point...

My boot stops were knackered... felt OK so I spent ages taking panels out trying to find problem. Fitted loads of sound proofing etc...still there. Then replaced boot stops... sound went. Try taking boot stops out completely and drive around... see if creaking has gone. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus usi...

Get some new boot stops... they cost £4 each. Or get vw to replace them under warranty.
