Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what are the VW-approved tyre sizes for my 1.4 TSi?

I am considering fitting winter tyres, but want to stick to manufacturer approved sizes to avoid any insurance hassles. I've read the car's manual but can't find a list of approved tyre sizes anywhere in it. I've also contacted three different VW dealerships but have yet to get a meaningful answer from them.

My car came with 235/45R17 (97) tyres on it, so clearly these are approved. Also, the tyre pressure sticker on the fuel filler cap gives pressure values for 225/45R17, so does this mean that they are approved?

If anyone can provide me with a list of sizes, or better still tell me where I can find them myself, I'd be really grateful.

I'd already looked at the Roccopedia and had found that page - it's got some excellent info on it. I was wondering what the source of it is, though? If my insurance company asks me to prove that, say, 225/45R17 are a VW-approved size for the Scirocco I would like to have something official I can point them to.

At least in Finland the approved sizes are marked in the registration form (the one that you usually leave alone until you hear "license and registration, sir"). These are listed in mine:

Axle 1:

205/50R17 89H
205/50R17 M+S 89T
205/55R16 M+S 91T
225/45R17 91H
225/45R17 91H (yes, the same size is listed twice)
235/40R18 91H
235/45R17 93H

Axle 2:

205/50R17 89H
205/50R17 M+S 89T
205/55R16 M+S 91T
225/45R17 91H
225/45R17 91H
235/40R18 91H
235/45R17 93H

Finnish legislation then limits how much I can deviate from these before I need to get the new size officially approved (which costs about 50 e or less). For example 235/35R19 is a legal size, as is 235/40R19.
