Rear grinding/ flapping noise

i think my trouble free luck had ran out....

with over 15k miles on the clock, i have noticed a kind of grinding noise ( like an old fashion drum brake with the pad rubbing it) and together with a kind of flapping metalic noise ( like those take away aluminium dishes).

i have looked everywhere but could not see anything coming loose.

the noise occurs intermittently but only at low speed, like 5-10mph. It only when the wheels are rotating, i.e. in motion. So loud you can hear it when the window is open.

I have been reading in another part of the forum, pointing this at the wheel bearing. I am really hoping it could be something else simplier. Could anyone shed any light on this please?

Could well be a stone caught in the shield behind the brake disc.Try carefully prodding all around it thru the wheel spokes. You may have to take the wheel off to get a proper look.If your not far from a dealer get them to check it.
Hope you sort it.

I had a stone stuck between the disc and the backing plate on my R32 twice. In both occassions it sounded as if the rear diff was dragging along the road.

jacked up the car the other day and took off both back wheels. There was nothing obvious or loose.

Poked behind the brake discs and there were no stones. The heat shield seems intact too.

so no idea what caused it. so far, it had not occured again....
