GT 170TDi perculiar noise when changing gear?

I'm just coming up to 800 miles on my GT 170TDi manual transmission and enjoying this car immensely.

In the last week I've been aware of a very faint but noticable rotary purring noise when depressing the clutch top change up on acceleration. I can only hear it in 1-2-3 gears but i guess above that road noise may be masking it. It also only seems to start itself after a few minutes after drivin from a cold start.

If I blip the throttle from idle when the clutch is depressed I can make it do it to, however clutch up and it doesn't appear to show it.

Everything seems to drive fine, no warning lights etc.

Just wondered if fellow owners of the same model of car have come across this at all. Is it a characteristic of the car and maybe something that likely to fade away when I'm able to start abusing it :D

Oh by the way, if you're listening to some loud tunes then you can't hear it.

Not to keen to loose a day of my life at the dealer through investigation unless it was causing drivability issues but on the other hand don't want victim of something more serious if you know what i mean.

One of the technicians went out with me on Saturday, could hear it but wasn't sure what it is. They want to get another one in so they can compare. Seems pointless to me as its quiet for the 1st mile and then it starts doing it.

Got it going in at the back end of this week to a local VW dealer to inspect in more detail. They said they need it for 2 days but on the up side they say I get a new courtesy Golf to drive around in.

if you are taking them out in the car, make sure you get a good few miles in and can hear the noise yourself first!

Yep, i've already taken them out weakened just gone. The guy heard the noise clearly but doesn't know what it is. Fingers crossed it's nothing to serious as bar the noise everything is running perfectly!

eeekk, problem with a bearing the gearbox they think. It's being stripped down to assess what it is exactly. Not good for only 1200 (been there since 400miles).

OMG - they now tell me they don't think its the gearbox but instead it's the turbo!

So, new turbo being fitted and see how that goes :(

Those warranty issues must cost VW a fortune when you think how willing the dealerships are to swap out some pricey parts when they're not entirely sure about what's wrong.

My last car, a 170TDI GT Sport Golf had loads of DPF issues - and it wasn't being driven on short trips. They though there might've been a fuel leak on the injectors, so when they removed them for a look, they found a tiny casting burr in the cylinder head. The technicians assumed that was the cause and replaced the cylinder head. A week later the DPF issues were back and they performed an official remap which fixed the issue.

How much did that un-necessary cylinder head replacement cost? Before they did the work, my car took about 1/2 a second to turn over and start up. After the cylinder head replacement, it took about 4 seconds every time.

What's the retail on a VW turbo? Somewhere in the region of £1200 - £1500?

Okay, latest update today. Turbo hasn't resolved the problem (didn't think it would) and they say that they do not know where to go next so are consulting VW technical for help.

They did add that they tried another new Scirocco today which 'so they say' had the same noise. But they agreed that it doesn't seem normal on the basis of the fact that the noise isn't there at cold, only when it warms up.

I'll see what their chats with VW come back with next week but I'm certainly not accepting the car in the current state as the noise is very annoying!
