Exhaust light / electrical faults - update

On Tuesday, the exhaust system warning light came on. A quick trip to my loal dealer said "nothing to worry about, bring it in when you can", at that time there were no obvious running problems.

On Thursday morning I got into the car. No warning light as I waited for the pre-heat light to go out... turned the key and the main cooling fans came on, but no start.

I tried removing the key to hear a constant clicking noise from behind the dash (presumably a relay). Even once I was out of the car and it was locked the clicking continued.

Key back in, and the fans still ran consantly but no sign of engine start (anti-theft ?).

Eventually after ~5mins of the fans running they stopped by themselves, at which point removing the key didn't cause the clicking.

Quick test drive, and the car feels sluggish, as my previous Golf did when the infamous air-mass-meter failed.

It goes back to the local dealer for testing on Monday

:(

I've got the car back. They reset the warning, but couldn't replicate any of the faults. Drove it 35 miles home, stopped for fuel, restarted to the warning light being on again.

Arranging for a longer visit to the dealers.

On the plus side, it is impressively clean !

I had a similar fault with the exhaust light - mine came on within two weeks of owning the car.

I 1st dropped the car off to VW and they had it for a day, couldn't find a problem and reset the light. Sure enough the light came on the next day, 2nd time round they had the car for 10 days - they managed to replicate the problem and said something about the engine running lean.. sounded like they struggled to find the source of the problem, they changed the injectors which didn't cure the problem and then they replaced the air mass meter... which sorted it.

Quick update. The faults on my car have been diagnosed as a 'real' electrical fault. After much wire tracing, the main power relays have been changed. So far, so good..!
