My DSG gearbox has gone, i've got a 2010 170 TDI and I was quoted 3.5g to fix it, its not worth a great deal more repaired. Any advise on getting it repaired whether it be the old one re conditioned or buying one, getting fitted etc, im stuck for getting to work.

That does sound like quite a lot but I’m guessing that’s from a garage with a recon box and warranty etc.
You can call around various garages and ask for quotes but they will most likely be around the same sort of cost.
When it comes to reconditioning gearboxes this can be quite hot and miss unfortunately as some companies recondition gearboxes to completely different standards. If you do decide to go down that route I’d suggest finding out exactly what you are getting for your money, who is going to be doing the work both reconditioning and fitting and doing your own checks (reviews etc)
What you also need to decide is like you have said if it’s actually worth doing the work or selling for spares or repairs then adding the money you were going to use to repair to what you sell the car for together and replacing it.
In my opinion of the car was mine I would also price up how much a used gearbox would cost as it may be significantly less than that but again you need to do your checks before buying parts, online can provide a good source of parts but you do need to do your checks (reviews / feedback etc) certain online sites when you search for parts you can see pics of the actual vehicle the parts are coming from and do a simple mot check and see the mileage the donor car has done, this can give you an idea of 1 the actual mileage of the donor car and 2, how honest the seller is being in about the mileage.
Another point to raise would be, is it actually the gearbox gone? A second opinion may also be worthwhile.
Hope this may help you

My DSG has the bearing whine... still drives fine, changes as it should, drives as it should.. I was quoted anywhere from 2k - 4k to fix the whine...
I think I'm going to sell as is... I just dont have the funds to fix it

That’s the issue at the moment, no one has any money because everything else costs so much

.
There is two ways of looking at it.. sell now with a whine and get a little more, or keep using as is until it breaks and sell then, it may last longer than expected but on the other hand it may fail completely tomorrow. Obviously people will spend a little more on a car that can be driven away as opposed to one that needs recovery.
