Boot Locking Mechanism not Latching

Anybody have any ideas on why my boot locking mechanism will not latch closed. I have taken off all the interior trim and removed the latch mechanism, stripped it down, cleaned and regressed it and the latch mechanism works manually, but when I reattach it and try to lock the boot the latch gets stuck open again. Have stripped it three times and every time the same. When you press unlock the boot motor makes a lot more noise than normal and sounds like it is working in overdrive. Any help much appreciated as car not useable until sorted!!!
