HOW TO: Deactivating DRLs

Connect VAG-COM / VCDS (I used v805.3 at the time) and select the control module bit
Click on
09-Cent. Elect.
Click on
Coding 07
Click on
Long Coding Helper
Select
Byte 0 (first box)
Make sure
Bit 3 is
checked and
Bit 4 is
unchecked
I can't remember what the default is but this setup uses the sidelights as DRLs. The only downside is that the sidelights turn
off when the headlight switch is turned to sidelights (although the rear lights still work), but the Auto function works as you'd expect (headlights come on when it's dark!)

Are you sure about having "Scandinavian" selected?
When I tried this setting I thought I'd got it cracked, and that the DRL's were off... But travelling in crawling traffic I found that the DRLs were still on. In Scandinavian mode it seems the DRL's come on once the car starts to roll, and go off again when you stop. You either need a shiny car in front to check your reflection, or to follow someone who can tell you if they're on or not.

Yep, the headlights on mine definitely stay off when moving with this setting - my girlfriend was following me in the Scirocco the other day and I definitely didn't have any headlights in my rear view mirror

No worries. Sounds like it could do with a couple of other people to give it a go though just to confirm whether it works it not - it definitely does on mine but it could be another bit I've switched somewhere...

I know it's a very emotive and personal thing but I would love to get mine switched off. I asked in my local/supplying dealer last week because they were changing the service type to long life on the car and I thought while they had it hooked up they could switch the DRLs off. After 30 minutes the service manager told me "our Master Technian" says it can't be done". I told him that was rubbish and I could even show him screen shots from Vag-Com but I guess they just don't want to do. I will ask a few local VW independants if they can help. Anyway to get back on topic:
I saw this on another forum, interestingly about people with Golfs trying to activate DRLs
http://www.vagoc.co.uk/vb/showthread.ph ... 1a4&t=1018
This says that "Scandinavian puts your front and rear lights on all the time. North American is only the front lights when the handbrake is not engaged" which sounds like that it's the North American setting that Arlurt has activated. I know this is from a Golf but presumably it's the same.

So if you uncheck BOTH bit 3 and bit 4 DRL's will be totally deactivated?
When I get mine I will definately want them all off.
Cheers

yours will be post week 45 MY2010 (or more likely 2011 but still newer so I digress) which is coded so as per the discussion
here you will need to 'deactivate' them via vagcom/vcds (similar method to the roccopedia instructions but may not be exactly the same, see the link to clarify) which will then allow the indicator stalk method outlined in the manual to work to switch them off (& on if you ever need to)
hope that explains it

Cheers for the info, and thanks for the welcome
Will having Bi-Xenons make any difference? Does it mean the discharge lamps will be on contstantly when I get it or is there another bulb?

I believe there is a separate bulb for the daytime running lights (as per pic below) for cars with xenon headlights but I don't have them myself so not totally sure. hopefully the following quote explains it too

ryancooke wrote:jonallen628 wrote:Ryan, just interested are your Xenon headlights (outer dipped beam) on permanently as daytime running lights or do other lights perform the DRL feature with the Xenons coming on when the dusk sensor triggers them?
if the lights are off, then the daylight lights are on (well not now because i turned them off)
then obviously there is auto
then side lights which are just the lower ones in the bumper
then main beam is xenon
then high beam is the xenon again, but the reflector/glass moves, and its crazy bright, love it

Super! Cheers guys. Expect once I've got the car I'll be looking for someone in my area with Vagcom. Or I'll just take the bulbs out. Lol! I assume the inside lights perform the "flasher" function on Xenon cars too.

RW: Hoping you can help as the fountain of all VAGCOM knowledge...
Got a lend of Flux's VAGCOM (10.6.0) and did everything I wanted to do with it (needle sweep, beeps on lock/unlock) on my 2011 week 19 build 170TDI, but I could not get deactivation of dipped beam as DRLs to restore old auto function without losing my sidelights too, despite doing the Central Elecs09>Coding>Bit 11>Byte 2 uncheck and then Bit 15>Byte 6 check.
Sootchucker had same bother with his Feb 11 Roc, he got around it by rechecking Bit 11>Byte 2, and then dimming DRLs to 1% (0% wouldn't work), can you tell me where to find this in VAGCOM 10.6.0, or alternatively what to alter in VAGCOM to allow switching on/off of DRLs in MFD so I can leave it off and switch on at MOT time etc?
Alternatively, do you think I will be more successful using VAGCOM 10.6.4?

Kann man auch ohne erkennen dass es sich um eine Fälschung für VCDS v10.6.0 Produktes handelt. Solltest du nicht in der Lage sein eine legitime Version vorzuweisen?

RW1: Couldn't get 10.6.4 to work, VAGCOM wouldn't verify the cable even though it's genuine, so reverted to the 10.6.0 on disc. Went down to the DRLs on but turned to 1% route for me and Rob-P's Rocs.

DRLs now as sidelights on only with correct light sensor activation. Also did XDS at setting 1, needle sweep, beeps on locking/unlocking.

Slightly off topic but can you do this with the free version of VAG-com or does it need to be the full fat paid for version?

The vagcom software its self is free, its the cable that costs & I'm not aware of anywhere you can pick up a free one.
