I currently drive a BMW 530I m-sport which is now far to big for my family needs. Kids have left home so dont need a big car. I have never owned a sporty hatchback - its always been comfy , boring cars for me.

I am looking at a sporty hatchback and there are 2 options - the R or the Seat Leon Cupra. On the R front can anyone advise me on what i should be expecting to pay for a decent second hand one. When did the mk 3 ones come out as i would rather get one of those.

do they have any mechanical issues to look out for (i have paid £2000 in bills on my BWM in the last 3 months)

also is there a lot of difference between an r-line and a r model in real world driving conditions

there is an r-line near me 2013 but with 69000 miles on it for £15000

Not easy to answer all of your questions in one simple reply.

Can't comment on a Cupra but given you've asked about the difference between an R-Line and an R, is it simply the look you are after or the performance? The R is a very different beast. The facelift R-Line now comes with Talladega wheels that were only fitted on pre-facelift Rs which gives it a more R like appearance but the 280 BHP petrol R brings a totally different driving experience (and of course cost).

Curious: why not a 135i? Very different driving experiences between FWD and RWD. Arguably, quite a difference in comfort and trim levels between the R and 135i, as well. Significant difference in the auto boxes, also, should that be a consideration.

I would consider a 2007-2010 Audi S3 as well

Same engine but you get the benefit of quattro plus Audi refinement - I would have totally gone for one if I hadnt already owned one previously for 5 years. Phenominal car and mine was tuned to 370bhp and still returning 30mpg :D

However, I do love my Scirocco R!

the mk3 came out in 2009 and the R version 2010 iirc, i personally don't like the r-line model it has no real reason to be in the scirocco line up. A second hand R i would estimate you are looking around £15,000 - £25,000 depending on mileage, condition and options. If i was to buy again i would go for Semi-Auto, Recaros, DynAudio and the winter pack. hope this helps.
