Steering weight around mid position and bush change

One aspect of my Scirocco that I need to improve upon is the the lack of steeering weight/feel around 5 to 10 degrees from mid position i.e when turning through this zone the car does start to turn but it isn't until you rotate further that some weight comes on and you can therefore be confident that the car will turn. i bought an 09 2.0TSi with 52K on the clock knowing that I will change the front arms to alloy ones and change the bushes. My question is therefore is this behaviour likely to be related to worn bushes within the arms or are there other mechanicals that need to be looked at to address this. It is quite possible that this is within the tolerance of a Scirocco's behaviour but a younger car I drove was better in this way.
I'm also looking to improve the way in which the car transfers its weight from left to right and back again, whilst there isn't much roll the ability to flick one way and then the other in a controlled manner is limited comapred to my last car and I was wondering if improved anti-roll bars could help this.
If I can get this sorted then I can see a set of coilovers coming but I wouldn't want to spend a lot and still have this mid position weight problem.
Overall the Scirocco is a great package but I do miss the steering feel and brakes of my Ford Puma.
