2 Alarm Sensors or 3 !?

I am trying to see how easy it is to swap the overhead mic from the left side of the console to the right (this was a common fault on the MK2 TT with poor sound levels). I took the trim off and discovered that there are 3 alarm sensor grills but only 2 sensors. I don't understand why VW have gone to the trouble of fitting 3 grills, maybe this is another part that is used on a number of different models that require 3 sensors?
