Parking sensors a must? Pah. What a load of BS.
No offence Pete, but if you struggle to reverse park a Polo then perhaps you just need to practice more. I don't think sensors will particularly help. For what it's worth I've never thought 'oooh I wish I'd ordered parking sensors because this thing is a nightmare'. It's a small hatch back/coupe with a few curvy bumps, hardly a 747.
True, the rear visibility isn't great. The A pillars are thick and chunky. The boot lip is a little high and yes it's annoying when you catch the edge of the parcel shelf and take the skin off your knuckles. But you know what? None of this matters.
The Scirocco is not about outright practicality, that's what the Golf is for and you've summed that up in your own words - nice, but there's no flair.
For me, the Scirocco is all about the way the car makes you 'feel'. You will just have to trust me but the minute you have the keys in your hand, you sit in front of the steering wheel, engage first gear and bury the loud pedal, all of the little niggles disappear. Somehow the car feels 'special'.
It's not perfect. I don't think it needs to be. It's the first 'new' VW I've driven (and I've driven them all from a Lupo to an R50) that really feels like it has a character - dare I say it about a modern VAG car but it really feels like it has a soul (those that have driven VW's from the 60's, 70's and 80's will know exactly what I'm talking about!)
For the money it is a phenominal car. Right now, I can't think of any other daily driver that I would rather have.
Finish Uni, work hard, save hard, buy one. You'll enjoy it.

I can park fine, i'm just not great at it considering i've been driving 6yrs, but I think I should give myself more credit...
Well I hope by the time I can afford such a car it doesn't look ancient!:(
Thanks for the help

i would say that if you are worried about practicality then perhaps the scirocco isnt for you. i have ordered a scirocco as i couldnt care less about practicality, my girlfriend does but she can keep her ford focus. i think which ever you choose you will be happy but think carefully about what your priorities are.

I went from a 5 door 02 polo to my 59 reg Roc.
Not regretted it for a minute. I did spec parking sensors and it's really solved the poor rear visibility issue.
Practicality - go for a golf if you do need to log lots of stuff around or more than 4 passengers. However the Roc has really good boot space for a coupe, and the boot lip is annoying but not a deal-killer for me.
4 passengers or less and the Roc is still really comfy, I have loads of leg room up front, and not had any complaints when there's someone behind. But more often than not its me or me and the missus in the car. If you often had more passengers, I'd consider a 5 door.
DSG - excellent choice if you have lots of traffic to navigate in the city. I live in London and it's a bitch here, so DSG is a godsend!
All in all, not a perfect car, but a really excellent one for my circumstances now.
