While the S3 is undoubtably quick it doesn't give the impression of speed if that makes sense. I thought the R sounded nicer and seemed more sprightly up through the gears.
The S3's seem a little lacking on spec, it's ok though I was told - we can retro fit cruise & rear parking for the princely sum of £1000

Did you test drove the new S3?
No, the existing 265bhp models, one DSG one manual. Don't think the new one is out quite yet, dealer mentioned 1st Sep when they'd have the 300bhp model.

The new S3 actually looks very good value decent basic spec and obvious options are not crazy expensive, cheaper than a new R as well.
Used not sure what's a better buy the R looks sportier and had a higher base spec. Didn't find the 8P S3 or Golf R for that matter a particularly involving/entertaining drive prior to ordering my R.

Have you seen the MK7 GTD? It has different wheels (arguably better looking on the GTD - the 19" upgrade costs same for both GTI and GTD, so they are equivalent value), twin pipes vs GTIs split pipes and chrome/grey everywhere there would be red on the GTI (grille stripe, stitching and seat pattern), otherwise it looks exactly like a GTI and is specced the same.

Was going to say the same thing. The new gtd is just a gti but with a Diesel engine and different badge. Oh and a difference in performance aswell. I think the new gtd would sell much more if it had same Bhp as the gti.

The GTD is expected to outsell the GTI by 3 to 1 - very good terms as a company car (I wish someone else was picking up my tab!) due to 109g CO2 per Km, if it had the same output as a GTI I think they'd kill the GTI off - there's got to be a performance gap maintained to avoid cannibalising sales.
Got about 6 weeks wait left for mine as it is scheduled for BW33. The GTD performance is very close to the 2.0TSI 210PS unit in the Roc with identical 4th and 5th gear acceleration figures in the 80-120kmph sprint, but the new GTI engine has opened the gap back up as it's got a lot of torque as well as another 10PS. My dad has had his GTD DSG for a few weeks now (and he ordered after me from the same dealer

) and it is a great car, just don't believe the fuel economy fairytales VW are spouting for the MK7 engines, they're barely better than the engine range currently in the Roc and MK6 Golf.
Giving serious consideration to a TDI-tuning box for it which will up it to 239PS and 494Nm if the insurance implications aren't ridiculous. It is a long wait (ordered end of March), but my Scirocco seems to be driving really well right now (I must be driving it quite hard, it's very thirsty for a TDI right now).

Good points. Lets jut say they did make the gtd same performance as gti. their is alot of people who would still refuse to buy it because its diesel despite same performance as gti. Petrol heads and all that..
So I don't think it would affect gti sales as much as some might think.
239bhp sounds good! That will be a rocket.
