Insurance and remapping
After a bit of advice about insurance. I’ve just rung my insurance for a new quote as planning on getting a TDI. However the car I’ve got my eyes on they said they won’t insure on my policy as it’s been remapped? (I did tell them just simply for a quote as I’d advised to mention it and see what they say) Do I just not tell them it’s been remapped? Not sure how easy it is for anyone to tell it’s been remapped. The car has different wheels on but I’m guessing that’s not a massive deal. Thanks

Re: Insurance and remapping
Many insurers are likely to take the view that, on average, people with remaps may be more likely to make a claim. And will charge a higher premium. I don't think you could expect them to pay the full amount of your claim if you haven't paid the full premium you would've been charged had you disclosed the remap - if they did that for everyone they'd risk going bust!
Under recent changes to the law ('CIDRA'), an insurer is expected to ask all the relevant questions, such as whether there are any modifications to the car - I've never not been asked that question whenever I've taken out a policy. There are then a range of things an insurer might be able to do if you haven't disclosed and then make a claim, depending on whether the non-disclosure was careless or deliberate - at the extreme these might include declaring your policy void.
From at least a moral point of view: if you ask this question on a forum, but go on not to disclose, it isn't really going to remain a case of you being careless - you're now aware there's an issue... And is it worth taking the risk that the insurer will find out that there was a remap, and leave you in the lurch?
I've heard there are insurers who specialise in remapped cars and don't take such a cautious view as the mainstream ones might. I haven't needed to use one, but someone else may be able to advise!

Ahhh right thanks for reply. I’ve never had a modified car so didn’t know it was such a big thing for insurers.risingson wrote:Many insurers are likely to take the view that, on average, people with remaps may be more likely to make a claim. I’ve also heard to go look at people such as Adrian flux as they feel with modified cars.
I don’t want to break the law hence why I’m asking what people advise. I’m sure a lot don’t admit it but maybe some don’t even realise their car was mapped before they bought it?
I will now go research some more. Thank you

Re: Insurance and remapping
Yep, I've heard of Adrian Flux too, through this forum. There may be others - I'm not sure.
I'm sure you're right that there may be some people out there who genuinely don't realise a second hand car had been remapped. I'm not actually sure how insurers deal with this. Even if they paid out, the payout might get reduced because the punter had effectively been underpaying their premium. And the policy would then probably get cancelled straight after, which is a bit of a black mark. It still probably wouldn't be a very pleasant experience to go through!

Re: Insurance and remapping
Just to reply to the above post. My car was purchased as standard from available car.. I took it on the dyno for a before and after remap test and the car had already been remapped... I had no idea what so ever. So its easy to buy a car remapped without even knowing...

Re: Insurance and remapping
Oh wow!!! I always thought it must happen but not actually had anyone prove that. My other half thinks his Skoda VRs might have been done but was sold as standard. Until he goes to get a remap we won’t know. Maybe some people don’t want to declare the bhp or a garage has received it in part ex not knowing the full truth.Babajang wrote:Just to reply to the above post. Re: Insurance and remapping
Wow good on you!!!! Mines a little higher as am 23, had a single car crash 4 years ago (insurers love this) and the fact I’m still under 25!!! However for a modded TDI car I was looking at with stage 2 remap I got quoted from Adrian flux and it was £900. Cheaper than my TSI un modded car!!Sam63 wrote:54 with 11 years no claims, no points in 21 years driving ( pure luck !)risingson wrote:That's a good price sam!
