There's not a lot of info about the various firmwares on that link, several satnav/car forums have a thread titled "VW RNS 510 & Skoda Columbus - FIRMWARE GUIDE & DOWNLOADS" that contains a lot of useful information in the first post about which headunits can take which firmware.

I done it, i followed this link

https://paulroberts69.wordpress.com/201 ... 10-satnav/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

you can't update the maps until the firmware can support the 32GB SD card

Thanks for posting that link, useful information for those wanting to attempt upgrading their firmware. I have a 2009 car but have never plucked up the courage to update the firmware, always worry about 'bricking' the unit Be careful out there!

I've been reading up on this as well, it does seem a minefield - I think I'm going to plump with having it done here http://hazzydayz.com/genuine-vw-rns-510 ... 1390-p.asp on the basis that, if they balls it up, they can roll it back again (that's my fear).

Luckily they're not too far from here either, probably won't get it done 'til the back end of July though.

you can do it yourself with a bit of research. There is a world of info on here too - if they are charging you more than 30£, I'd do it yourself.... but them, I am pretty brave with my car lol

I've read all the links above, as well as others - my fear comes from the comments on them, loads of people saying various bits no longer work from the steering wheel - I've just shelled out £190 for OEM bluetooth that I know requires a VAGCOM change, so I don't want to lose that etc - I'm pretty brave mechanically, but not electrically..... never say never, though ;)

You can't lose VAGCOM changes when you change your firmware... I could tell you what firmware to use, but I'd have to insert a disclaimer :p.. There have been modified firmware out there to work on any unit... But I don't recognise your hardware version, I think you have an early RNS510

Have vwnavi website disappeared from the websphere?

It's definitely an early version of the firmware as 'version info' doesn't appear if I press and hold setup for 10 seconds or more.. Going from the paulroberts link it seems the only way is to take the RNS510 out and check the model number, which I'll probably do on Saturday. Didn't know that about VAGCOM (clearly) that's a great help so thanks for that :yes:

And, yep, vwnavi's gone - I'm an IT bloke, it doesn't take months to update forum software :shake:

Shame about vwnavi, there was a bloke on there called Josi who tweaked a lot of the firmware to work with all units. You tried gps underground?

Also, let's know all the details of your unit when you get it. If you can provide all details like the first post, even better. I have some text about versions I saved from vwnavi that could help.

Right, I've got the model - 1T0 035 680 C, HW H50, SW 2840 (I've got V13 maps, but got the DVD for that and nothing saved on the hard drive either - so nothing to lose there) I'll pm you the link to the photo. :)
