Weird hole in steering column trim

Does anyone know what this hole is all about? Bought my Rocco a few weeks ago from a used car dealer. VW dealer doesn't know why it's there and it doesn't show on their diagrams. It doesn't look like a diy hole to me, just like some cover is missing.

I suspect the wrong lower trim piece has been fitted (either in the factory or by someone replacing it later)

5N0858559F should be the lower trim section for the steering wheel and it should not have this slot on the left hand side that you have - it should just be a hole for the indicator stalk.

As VW say, there is no cover piece to put in there according to the ETKA parts database.

That lower trim piece looks as if it's off another VAG model, which has a separate cruise control stalk, hence the hole.

How very odd, why would someone need to replace this with the incorrect part.. If it's happened in the factory I have no way of proving it..

I suppose my next question is how do I fit the correct trim part? It costs ~£30 but I'd rather fit myself and save the extortionate labour the VW dealer will likely charge.

The thread that shows how to retrofit cruise control shows how to remove the cover top and bottom covers. You need to remove a few other things first! Good luck.

Is all of that removal really necessary to swap a bit of trim?

Unfortunately yes - in order to get to 2 of the screw's holding that lower trim piece on.
