Worth the upgrade to an R?

Post by RoccoTom »

I realise this can only come down to personal preference, but...

I reach the end of my 3-year PCP in March next year. I'm swithering over whether to keep my 2013 GT 2.0 TSI or upgrade to a new facelift R. I love everything about my current car, but can't stop thinking 'what if...?'.

Any thoughts from owners of the facelift R? Anyone been in the same position as me? Is the extra power, styling and prestige worth the extra money?

I don't mind about it being based on an old engine platform and only front wheel drive. The only thing I don't like on the new one is the interior (specifically the three extra gauges, ineffective cup holder and cluttered speedo) - which is a problem as that's where you spend most time!

Cheers
Tom

If those are the three things putting you off an R then you're seriously off the mark.

Yes it comes down to personal choice and most probably the practicalities of owning (and running) such a beast. Now on my third Roc, I can honestly say it's the best car I've ever had in 40 years of driving. That said, i made the change because of a change in personal circumstances and not needing the frugality of a diesel (20,000 miles a year to 5,000). So, way up the extra cost of full fat fuel, £225 / year road tax, insurance, the increased risk of some toe rag having it away against the fact it's the top of the range model with all its positives and the bloody great smile it puts on your face every time you get in it and you'll get my drift!

I have had a diesel and an R and loved it. I was gettin mid 20mpg. I had to sell it and miss it. My circumstances have changed so I have just ordered a new one. I didn't initially like the gauges but they have grown on me now. The new one has the same mfd as the new golf which I find great. Plus it's got the new discover sat nav as standard

If you don't need great mpg then use car wow and get a great deal. I am taking pcp and got 14% knocked off the price.

For a lot less you could make yours faster than an R (it's the 200ps right?)

Straight through exhaust, uprated air intake and a stage 2 remap from revo could give you over 300 bhp for under £2k. And the car would sound amazing.

That's what I'd do if I were you. There's lots of potential in the 2.0 tsi blocks.
