MDI wiring Pinouts - cable colours

Post by rixtakai »

Hi guys,

My car was broken into (http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... hp?t=20197" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and I've been repairing my unit.

When the unit was jacked out... It seems they damaged the connector from the MDI unit. I now have 3 wires exposed from the connectors.

I believe the black cable is Pin 2 (CAN Low) leaving Pin 1 (ground) and Pin 7 (12v).

I have no way to determine which of the white and brown should be Pin 1 or Pin 7.

Any chance somebody might be able to help me out or even take a picture of their harness?!

Thanks. ImageImageImage

Hi,

Yeah i was just reading your other thread on the theft of your RNS 510 - man, ya have my sympathy - damn scum everywhere.
As you say it wouldn't be so bad if they just took the unit without breaking the window and damaging the wiring at the same time.

Ok i have been working out the pinout from the ElsaWin wiring diagrams and RNS510 pinout.

On the 12 pin connector as you have photo'ed.

Pin 1 is Aux Left input
Pin 2 is Ground
Pin 7 is Aux Right input

The cable which has been pulled is actually a stereo audio cable and is not carrying power.

So Pin 2 is definitely the black ground wire. As evidenced by the fact it is heatshrink'ed and is comming off the screen of the audio cable.

According to VW diagrams the other 2 wires should be green and yellow - but hell i've found that sometimes they don't follow the factory spec for colour coding. In your case these are brown and white.

Unfortunately i therefore can't tell you which is left and which is right - but just try it, the absolute worst that will happen is left and right will be back to front when you are playing from the aux input...just swap them round if thats the case.

Diagram is below, for reference J503 is the media player (RNS510 etc), J650 is the MDI media interface.
T12f is the connector in your photo, where /1, /2, /7 refers to the pin number.

You my friend are a legend. I would have struggled to find anything as has been the case over the past few days.

I was going to just try it out but unfortunately because the RCD didn't power up when connected through that harness I was worried on shorting the RCD out if I got it wrong?! I take it because the ground cable isn't in that's why it's not working... Nothing to do with power etc.

I'll give it a try. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how I get on.

No problem,

However the RCD should have powered up through the harness pass through, if thats all that was pulled out was the aux audio connections.
The ground on pin 2 of that 12 pin block is just for the audio and it shouldn't stop the unit from powering up.

Have a good look at all the connections on the harness to make sure there is nothing else damaged / loose.

The full pinout of the RNS510 and hence the entire connector block can be found here:

http://www.my-gti.com/529/volkswagen-rn ... ssignments

Primary power is on connector 2, pin 15 positive, pin 12 negative.
