Scirocco specific questions to ask when buying

Post by nicodemus3d »

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and looking to buy a scirocco (to replace our ageing vw polo). My wife and I are wanting something sporty before we get into the the whole baby business, so have been looking at the manual 2.0 TSI GT. So far it's looking like it's between a 2008 (£11k) and a 2010 ( £14k). Is it worth plumping for the newer model (milage is pretty similar)? As far as I can tell, there's not much difference between the models?
Also, are there any specific questions we should ask or things we should look for? It's been nearly 8 years since I bought a car so I'm not hugely clued up about what to look for.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hey Mike. There are a lot more experienced heads on here that will be able to give you some invaluble advice but i'm going to give you a run down of my experience so far...

I currently own a black 2.0 TSI GT manual with a cockpit full of goodies that i've owned for about 11 weeks. Its been a rocky start to the relationship i'm not gonna lie. This is mainly due to me not doing my own homework. I got quite a high mileage car (85k) and in some respects its showing this. I also don't think the previous owner looked after it very well. There is a slight hesitation when driving at low speeds and the general concensus is a carbon build up on the inlet valves which is a known issue. If you go for a low milage car and drive it right and don't use cheap (supermarket) fuel it shouldn't be a problem. If the budget allows, I'd opt for the newer model as i think it has a crisper cleaner look and it will look more current for longer than the older model. And even tho its a 2 door, the doors are huge so easy for getting a baby in the back! I get about 33mpg on a 20mile trip on a dual carriage way but the performance is worth the economy.

Even after our rocky start, I love my Scirocco to bits and don't regret buying her. She's fast and pokey and sticks to the road like glue and i never get bored of hearing the turbo whistle as it spins up!

Good Luck mate and hope you find the perfect Rocco.

Stu-

Cheers Stu. Both versions we've found have around 45000 miles on the clock, so fingers crossed theyre ok. As for the difference in looks, both cars look identical as far as I can tell from the photos. Was there a facelift at some point? Is there a thread on here that illustrates the crisper look?

The body shapes are incredibly similar. I belive the facelift was around 2010 to bring the look inline with the rest of the VW range. Its subtle things like the lights and bumpers are slightly different. The gallery of members cars should provide the images but i think you need a certain amount of posts before access is allowed (5 to10 i think). Or if you look up reviews for the 2008 and current models and study the pics, you should be able to spot the differences. At 45k and well maintained, they should be ok. I noticed the hesitation around 10-40mph. Its quite distictive. . My suggestion would be if you get hesitation while engine is hot then walk away. But I can't imagine you having an issue with this on low miles.

Like i say, this is my limited experience and i hope im not putting you off because regardless, its a joy to own.

I have an 09 2.0 Tsi and as far as I know externally it is no different whatsoever to my next door neighbours 2011. I bought mine with 42,000 on the clock and within the first three months the inlet manifold light came on, then off again for a few weeks, then on again. It was still under 2nd hand purchase warranty to I took it back and the inlet manifold was replaced at a cost to the warranty provider of about £600 I believe. I guess the original owner decided to trade the car in whilst the light was off as he knew it would not be too long before it was on again! I also had a water leak from the water pump housing which is a common problem and that was £200 ish to sort. Apart from that it has been fine and I have had it for over 2 years now and love every minute of driving it. I have had all sorts of cars including a brand new merc and a golf and this is by far the best car I have ever driven. I am currently searching the country for the right R version to upgrade to.

Hi, bit late too this but if you've not made your decision a few points to add!

First the interior of the newer one is improved a great deal imo, (the dash mostly).

Second while I think you should indeed get the newer one I would say £14k seems high for 45000+ miles! I bought my 2010 tdi rocco for 11,700 and it only had 36000. I work as a used car buyer for Evans halshaw so know car market values pretty well, Shop around more I'd say.

Thirdly what alloys are on each? For me the turbine rims where very much preferable to those other plasticky 8 spoke spidery looking ones (sorry don't know their name) but I don't know if you care about that. Also is one leather the other not etc? These kind of things where factors when getting mine. (Multi function wheel as well). All these things can drastically affect resale prices as well!

That's all choose wisely!
