im worried!

Post by stanj028 »

Hello scirocco central,

In a near 2 days I am going to look at a 1.4 Tsi 160 model.

It's got 9k on the clock, full vw services and mot since day 1 and I am in love with it already (i have seen it already) it is a 59 plate and other than a few optional extras that are missing (sat nav and climate control) it is very appealing (it's up for 11,500 is this a fair price?) And it also has the winter pack!

The reason I am worried however is that, upon searching for reviews and on this forum, it appears this model may have a sinister engine flaw with pistons (and on a random note my research seems to have dug up that this is most commonly piston 3 for some reason) and 2009 has been mentioned as a problem year, it appears It may also have an older engine type.

The car is of course out of warranty so I do not want to risk anything!

I have even seen people so desperate they bought a whole new engine!

Did this model effect the 59 era at all/ what can I check to ensure I'm not about to run head first into a brick wall?

This Is my first 'Roc and I intend to fall in love with it but this is playing on me now!

Thank you all in advance!

Regards,

Stan

Quite simply,.I wouldn't consider one unless it had.a cast iron warranty. 59 plate is within the window of misfiring and oil consumption issues, that are well documented.

I have an 09 model! Got the cam belt and cam belt adjust/tightener changed under warranty. This is the main problem. I got a clicking sound on cold starts, after the parts where changed the problem went away.

Your car has a cam chain as opposed to a cam belt

On the one hand we probably need to acknowledge that the majority of the 09 plates will have had no significant issues. And the mileage on the car you describe is simply amazing for the year, and suggests it's a one owner car. In which case, it would give me confidence that it's unlikely to have been abused. That said, myself, I wouldn't be paying out that sort of money on that particular plate and model without negotiating a lengthy guarantee.

Could you possibly stretch your budget a little more as well as accept higher mileage? You can pick up 11 plate 160hp 1.4s from franchise dealers from 13.5K (screen price, so some room for a spot of bargaining), and get a year's warranty and roadside assistance thrown in as part of the VW used car package. For example, TL Derby (VW franchise) have a 11 plate with 25K miles for a screen price of 13.5K - you would get it for no more than 13K. They've had it at least as far back as Nov, when they wanted 16K for it. Of course, you'd have to see it in the flesh. VW used is showing several others (either manual or dsg) on 60 and 11 plates with decent mileage for under 14K (and each of which you should be able to get down to 13K).

Thanks for the feedback guys, I am still going to view this one, I enquired about a vw warranty but my budget wouldn't quite stretch to it.

Are third party warranties like warranty direct any good.

Also mileage is all genuine on this one!

Only warranty that's worth it is the VW Extended one managed by Mondial.

If you sre buying from VW dealer.it will come with 1yr warranty however, extended.warranty isn't that expensive. I've just been quoted £390 for comprehensive with VW Assist and no excess for my 170 diesel.

Honestly, I would look further inti.getting the VW warranty if it comes without one. Negotiate the price down to cover it

That sounds cheaper than I first thought and appears in line with the after market ones.

Would Volkswagen cover the known fault if it goes wrong though? as I know the aftermarket warranty comapnies find any reason like this not to pay out!

also do you think i could haggle with VW a bit as i am also intending to buy a 2 year service and MOT plan (and keep buying after that)

As long as I would be covered despite it being a known issue?

I would buy the warranty next month so take the risk on it for a month!

I heard of one guy that said VW refused to change the engine in a 1.4 relating to this exact issue but that was 2010 just after the fault year so he was probably in the wrong

Thank you so much for the incite into the VW Warranty!

regards

Just a note that my warranty price is based on being taken out before the 3yr manufacturer's warranty. If the car is out of warranty it might be more expensive.

In theory VW should cover a known issue out of warranty, especially at such a low mileage but in my experience you need to fight and have a good dealer on your side.

I can say from persoanl experience that 2010 models are not completely fault-free.

I purchased mine 2 weeks ago, a '10 model with 50k on the clock. Service history showed that the engine was replaced with a brand-new one in September 2013. Despite the car being out of warranty (which is 2 years over here) it's been done for free by VW. The engine itself has done about 5k, it's running like a dream, and as a '13 model it should be fault-free.

Maybe you should try finding one that's had its engine replaced?

mine was new from Jan 2010. I remember i had 2 engine related recalls involving an engine software update. Not sure if they were related. If those were done, then 2 less things to worry about.

My concern is the 9k miles. why so little? its less than the average of 12k per year for most people.
