Instrument Backlighting

On my drive to work this morning, it was a little overcast so the headlights came on automatically (I've VCDS the lights to back to fully auto with the sidelights only via LED bulbs as DRL's). As it wasn't too dark, I turned them off from the switch and just relied on the DRL sidellights.
My instrument pack at the time was quite brightly lit, and obviously all the other dash lights (climate control panel etc) were also lit. When I turned off the headlights, as normal the instrument backlight stayed on, and all other dash lighting extinguished (again as normal).
However after a couple of miles, I noticed that my instrument backlighting had gone very dim, not completey off, but just like I had turned the rheostat down, then a couple of minutes later, they came back on at full brightness ?
Is this normal behavoir, i.e. does the Rocco use the lightsensor to control the illumination levels automatically of the dash lights, or do I have a loose connection or something ?
