is the 3 door golf Gti obsolete

Post by langlord »

Is the 3 door golf gti dead forever.

With virtualy all the recent reviews basically saying that the current 3 door golf gti is pointless as the only slight benifit is the extra rear seat, will this mean the end of high sales levels, I know the golf gti will always sell due to its following but with recent reviews of the mk6 golf saying that models are going to be £600 more expensive, why would any one pay more for the mk6 3 door gti when te scirocco is then cheaper, as surely it makes it even more pointless.

What are your thoughts?

i don't think you can factory order any sort of gti now, i may be mistaken

i don't think the 3 door does anymore, the 5 door does given the practical issues of boot, seats and access so does offer something different

we ordered a 5 door gti pirelli aswell as the scirocco as needed a sensible family car in order to cope with trips to ikea and accomodate parents etc, went for that over a standard gti given she wanted the 230ps motor and its the last of the mk5 bloodline and we got a excellant deal, its slightly controversial given the love it or loathe it looks and interior (not seen one in flesh), we will keep it four to five years so not too worried about short term residuals

interstingly my other half hated the looks of the scirocco, she is coming round slowly but doesnt want one herself

I read somewhere a while back that the MKVI Golf will only be available in five door. That would significantly differentiate between the Golf and Scirocco.

Also the new GTI will have more power than the Scirocco.

Obsolete??? What utter pish.

Totally different markets.

Exactly the same as when they had the Corrado's and Golf MK3 for sale in the early 90's.

Not eveyone wants a 4 seat 2 door coupe, the scirocco aint practical in the slightest (rear vis is very very poor and boot is next to useless), whereas a 3dr Golf GTi is fast, practical and still a very good car (and 3dr's always look better than 5drs IMO).

Wowzers - anyone else think, after looking at 'Rocs for a while, Golf's look just soooo tall?!

I agree I dont think it will ever disapear as such but I can see the 5 door comfortably outselling the 3 door version.

Oh well it was quite a while back - probably just speculation.

Best pic I've seen of the MKVI. Maybe the Mrs should get one

new gti is meant to to take its looks from the w12 concept golf, if you look at it it gives a hint of the mk6 and scirocco and does away with the mk5 look

new interior on the mk6 looks great

....I have a 5-door Mk5 GTI and have driven many 3-door versions (all heavily performance modified but that's not the point). I've also borrowed the new 'Rocco. My opinion is that the 3-door GTI is quite different from the Scirocco - Which is "better" is a very subjective opinion and up to the individual.

The Scirocco offers a more sporty appearance, handles well, and has an improved interior. However, it isn't really a real-world 4-seater - Don't believe everything the journalists write! I'm exactly 6ft 0ins and was barely 5mm from touching the roof when sat in the back and also couldn't see out the side window without ducking. Also the boot is much smaller and the rear seats forward creates a big step. Now, all that may not matter but my point is that they are different cars with a different market.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of Mk5 sales were 3-door. Yes, VW factory production of the Mk5 GTI has ended (also the Mk5 R32 some time ago).

I don't think we know yet if VW will offer a 3-door GTI Mk6. They may offer ordinary Golf versions in 3-door options.

Btw, I think that a Scirocco with any engine less than 2.0T will feel under-powered - Isn't the new Scirocco supposed to be a sports car? A GTI Coupe some have called it.

the mk gti concept gets launched in paris on 2nd october

the 3 door gti is a legend, lets face it mk 2's and 3s all looked better in three door, mk4 jury still out, mk5 3 door edges 5 in looks dept too (all be it gap closed), mk5 has captured that timeless looks aided by the wheels (more standard golfs are showing there age)

Last article i read on the Mk6 GTI stated that it would have increased power over the Mk5, so any redundancy due to the Scirocco is short lived, also, the boot in the 3 dr GTI is massive compared to the boot in the roc.

So no, the GTI is not dead yet...

As far as I am aware, and have had it confirmed by a friend of mine who works for the vag group (albeit its still speculation), the new golf will be missing the R32 from the lineup and they are working on releasing the Rocco with the 4 wheel drive system and 3.6 lifted from the passat lineup!
Car is now Sold!!!!! BMW 7 Series for now as nice and big but holding out for something a little special as my toy :)

....The end of the R32 is common knowledge but not the speculation about a 3.6 '4WD' (Haldex?) Rocco - Though personally I don't see it happening and its cost is likely to rival the Audi TTS and possibly TTRS. Having been in a modified TTS on track this weekend I think the Audi is a more honest fast 2-door coupe and has proper quattro.

I know I wouldnt buy it, I'd be straight down to the Mitsubishi garage and driving away in an Evo X SST! I'm not sure I see the 3.6 but perhaps an R is some form or another
