What engine is best ?!

Im currantly looking for a scirocco but cant decide what engine to go for im aiming for a my10 model.

I currantly have a audi a3 2.0tdi stage 2 and love the power and MPG with cheap insurance.

weighing up the pros and cons of the statistics ive come up with this. (what ever car it shall be remapped)

Diesel 170 (208bhp 321Nm Remapped)
Pro's

Cheap Insurance
Good MPG
Good Torque

Cons
More expensive initially
dont sound as good as petrol

2.0Tsi 200 (266bhp 313Nm Remapped)
Pro's
fastest
Sounds better then diesel

Cons
High Insurance
Poor MPG (what mpg do you get?)

1.4Tsi 160 (219bhp 240Nm Remapped)
Pro's

Cheap Insurance
More Bhp then diesel
Sounds better then diesel

Cons
Not as Good MPG then diesel
Not as much Torque then diesel

why else would you buy the 1.4Tsi over the 170 Diesel !?

If you were to choose what engine you had would you keep the engine you choose and any help to decide what engine is best would be a great help

i've never felt the need to ask a forum which engine/car i should buy given your going to get the various fanboy elements, go with your gut reaction which 9 times out of 10 will be right and the one that best suits your needs

also i think your Nm are actually lbft ;)

I don't think the 2.0TSI is expensive insurance. It's cheaper than my old Fiesta ST. If you're looking at having them remapped however, then of course you're going to have rises in insurance regardless on each to factor in if this is such an issue..

the 1.4 and tdi 170 are the same but the 2.0tsi would be around £500 more. my heart wants the 2.0 but im struggling to justify paying so much more on insurance and mpg over the more practicle diesel i think the only way ill buy the 1.4 is if i dont want to pay so much on insurance and cant find a cheaper diesel however im sure if i buy the 1.4 id wish i went with the 2.0  what are you reviews of the 2.0tsi over the others?

Chase:

Why compare a 2.0TSI with a 1.4TSI? Look at needs/cost/affordability for your circumstances.

You look to want to be remapping whatever you get, that's where insurance becomes expensive (assuming you will be informing insurance company of the remap).

I would think that a stock 2.0TSI would cost less to insure than a remapped 1.4TSI for almost any driver. Insurance companies don't like remaps, an increase in premium generally isn't relative to the increase in BHP, they will cover you for a disproportionate price.

Don't forget that almost 1/2 the list price difference between a 1.4TSI and a 2.0TSI is in the GT trim equipment you don't get as standard on the 1.4TSI. If you would spec all that stuff on a 1.4TSI anyways, then the 2.0TSI doesn't seem like a massively dearer option.

The 2.0TSI is the better car, and a basic one will depreciate less (in % of original price terms) than an option loaded 1.4TSI (the options have a poor retained value compared to the car, when you come to part ex).

If you're thinking about fuel economy, then the 1.4TSI isn't that much more economical than the 2.0TSI unless you're being gentle with the right foot. There are people on here that can average 35mpg in a 2.0TSI, and only 35-37mpg in the 1.4TSI, because they're driving it harder. Cruising on the motorway, and the differences between the 2 are negligible.

The biggest dilemma here is between the 1.4TSI and the 170TDI. From stock the TDI is more powerful and has more mid-range torque. It's no faster than the 1.4TSI from a static start at the traffic lights, but through the gears once it's moving, it is noticeably quicker. From your remap figures, the 1.4TSI remapped does have a slight BHP advantage over the remapped 170TDI, but as you say, the superior torque on the TDI will pretty much wipe out that advantage with in-gear acceleration. Doesn't sound like you're that concerned with mpg if you want to remap whatever choice you go with.

There are relibility worries with 1.4TSIs right now. The issue might not be as widespread as the forum posts would have you believe, but plenty of people here have had misfire problems associated with coil-packs.

If you don't like diesels and don't care too much about fuel economy then discount the TDI straight away, although the TDI is the smoothest and quietest unit at tickover i've come across (noticeably smoother than BMW and Merc 4 cylinder units), and has a very throaty roar when revved.

If I were you (assuming you will inform insurance of remap), i'd take a stock 2.0TSI over a remapped 1.4TSI, and if it's still not quick enough for you, you have the option of remap later, when you have another years no-claims under your belt (assuming you don't have full no claims from you saying a 2.0TSI wiill cost you £500 more to insure than 1.4TSI).

Woah thank you for taking your time for an in-depth reply, I think I shall rule out the 1.4 as the diesel would have a much better mpg and torque, just got to think to myself weather I will be happy with a low mpg for a faster car or weather to be more practical and go for the diesel as I shall be keeping the car for around 3 years. So hard to choose!

As it's been said before. You need to look at what you need it for. Insurance companies will check if you smack it up at the ECU (they even did it to my brothers Fiat Panda 2 years ago - and that thing was 8 years old!)

What will you do with it? Drive to work daily? Pleasure run about? Do you have family? Children / Elderly relatives. Are you sure this is the right car regardless?

Never thought about the increase, I would notify as not really worth the risk of no payout! I'd be using the car daily for a aprox. 5 mile drive. I'm only 19 so defiantly no children or plans of! I'm sure the scirocco is the car for me ever since it came out I've loved the look although I thought about another Audi A3 or a BMW 3 series coupe but really like the scirocco more and seems more suited as the BMW seems to have high insurance for just a 177bhp 2.0 diesel. What Mpg do you get if you try your best and drive sporty round town county and motorway. I pretty much drive only round town and country roads other then everyother weekend motorway and only do aprox 10000 miles a year. I wonder how much more id actually be paying a month running a 2.0tsi over a TDI170. thanks again for your input. Has anyone made a thread for people to most their mpg I've seen one for the 1.4

There is another MPG thread if you look a few pages back. From cold it'll take a few miles to fully get up to temperature anyway so even with the diesel I doubt you'll get into the 50's. Once you get onto the A roads or motorway that's a different matter, seeing 55 is quite easy without too much granny driving.

As everyone has said above, its all about personal choice. However, for me the 1.4 was out as it was not available in the GT trim. That only leaves the 2.0 140 diesel, 2.0 170 diesel and 2.0 TSI.

Personally I am a diesel convert, and dont really want to go back to petrol as it is so much cheaper on insurance with much better fuel consumption. I ruled out the 140 diesel and went with the 170 as it was only another £700, on a car of this price thats not really noticeable. My current car is a 140 PD, so the 170 CR diesel is a noticeable "improvement".

I would recommend trying them all and seeing what works best for you.
