Roof bars problem

Hi

I am using VW roof bars on my Scirocco. When I travel the black clips on the side of the bars always seem to flip up and stick out which is really annoying! Does anyone else have the same problem and have they ideas how to fix it.

Thanks :)

Yes agreed this happens to me as well. Doesn't seem to cause any other problems but they're going back to the dealers for a warranty clainm on this and the missing grey plastic trim strips under the bars that casues the wind noise. For more see here:

If you mean the clips on the side which cover the fixing bolt, they do seem a bit flimsy. I snapped the hinge on one very early on, and tape that side down with black insulating tape when I have the bars fitted (once or twice a month) to ensure it doesn't pop open while driving.

I lost the other in high winds today - it must have popped open at motorway speeds and didn't survive the wind.

Does anyone know if replacement parts are available?

PS - I've also lost the grey strip from under the front bars some time ago - obviously wasn't well stuck on. Doesn't seem to affect the bars too much, but then I use them for bikes, not a roof box, so I might not have noticed any increase in noise or decrease in MPG.

I got a dealer swap for my orginal bars but really to no avail, they still flap out. It's a design/manufacturing fault.

sorry to hi-jack this thread, but have a couple of issues myself.

I bought a second hand set of VW roof bars, but unfortunately it didn't come with the 'application aid' - i.e. what I assume is essentially a large credit card, for peeling back the window seals.
1. Do you use them, or do you have a better method?
2. If you do, can u buy replacements from VW?

Final question - when using bike carriers, have you found the bracket to be too small to go around the quite deep roof bars?

Cheers!

The application aid was essentialy a credit card sized piece of plastic and a chunk of foam with a slit in. ALthough useful, all could be assembled from alternative scrap bits.

Collected my new Viper today. I got the dealer to throw in some VW roof bars and he must have thrown them in pretty hard because when I opened the box, the plastic fold-up covers at one end of both bars were broken. The hinge is really flimsy.

Needless to say they have been returned (good excuse to go out for a spin!) and am expecting a replacement tomorrow. I note the comments about them blowing open. I am going to investigate the use of a small section of bike inner tube to keep them closed (like an elastic band) when the new ones arrive.

The car is great!
