combi instrument menu

im trying to get the menu in the combi instrument display up on my dash as i want to change the fuel consumption from l/100k to mpg. anyway, the manual says switch on the ignition and hold down button under the wiper lever for a few secs (this is way to do it when you dont have steering wheel controls according to the manual). tried it multiple time but no joy. anyone got any ideas?? from what i read in the manual the menu option should be standard on all models...
