I know this isn't really important, but I was wondering if anyone knew why it appears that on some models of Scirocco, the battery in encased in a 3 peice plastic cover (like in the MK5 Golfs), but on others, it's in a sort of felt cover with a lid ?
See illustration below items 11, 12 & 13
As I said it's not really that important, but I think the 3 piece pastic cover looks much better (and probably more expensive). Is it all just down to cheapening, or is there a technical reason why some batteries can't be encased ?
Might be size related. The petrol cars will probably have a smaller battery than the TDIs, with possibly the 1.4 variants having a smaller battery than the 2.0TSI GT. My 140TDI has the felt-cover type battery (looks like a small cooler bag for a picnic). I would expect that the plastic case takes more room than the material one.
It might also have something to do with which ancillary devices are close to the battery (again, dependent on variant/engine), whether they would expose the battery to much heat, dependent upon what they are and proximity to the battery.
I wouldn't worry too much about what it looks like under the bonnet unless you're replacing the original one with a modded perspex bonnet. You'll love the bonnet stay!

As I said chaps, it's a very minor point and one that I won't worry about. I don't think it's to do with the battery sizes though, as my current Golf is also a 140TDI with a 74AH/380A Battery (the engine shot above) which is the same size as the one on the Rocco, and this fits perfectly ?
Options: RNS510, DSG, leather, 19" Talladega's, Dynaudio, Bluetooth, front covered cup holder, rear cup holders, piano black cubby hole, Audi R8 oil cap
I might be confused but i reckon i have the felt one (less a felt lid) inside my plastic one (with a plastic lid) ?, i thought they had just dropped the plastic box ?
Interesting Shaun, as item number 15 in my earlier post does show a "lining" of some sort without a lid that seems to go inside the 3 piece plastic box?

Why even worry about it? Why bother getting more parts? I'm sure the purpose of it is to just insulate the battery from cold and hot extremes so that it doesn't rupture or leak any of it's acidic goodness.
I worry when VW do something that reduces cost - the list price also tends to go up at the same time.

Well, after taking delivery of my new Rocco Bluemotion, I am pleased to report is has the proper hard plastic covers over the battery, not the felt condom.
I'd wager a guess that all the 1.4s come with the felt cover and all the 2.0s come with the plastic. Don't know what the real reason for that is though, and of course I'm sure there is no tangible benefit to having one over the either.
My old Golf GT 1.4 170 had a felt cover, and when I was at the showroom recently, I did notice that the Rs and the Golf GTis all had the plastic cover. My current Scirocco 2.0 Tsi has a plastic cover.
Sootchucker: Another Mod saved. Bet you'd have bought the parts to go plastic if you'd had a felt one!
I wish VW would look at these forums, and see what mods people are doing with VAG parts and then build them that way anyways.
