Scirocco Central

Hi guys,

I've had my R DSG for about 6 weeks and if someone asked me to summarise my feelings in two words i'd have to say 'bloody expensive'. The cost of petrol is spiralling out of control (80pw) and please don't mention the future need for insurance or servicing!

In short, its a good car but certainly not worth the money that I'm paying each month and if I'd have known it was going to be this expensive I would have got myself a basic Golf TDI and bought ipads with the remaining budget.

So if your thinking of an R....I'd think and think again. I don't mean to discourage anyone I just wish that I'd been warned/been more sensible.

If anyone has any strong thoughts.... please let us all know.

How many miles do you do a year Stephen?

It depends really but in 6 weeks ive covered almost 1500 miles and each year I'd guess about 10k.

Please don't calculate my yearly petrol cost for that will just make me cry.

Perhaps you should have worked all this out before buying the car, I knew how much the car was going to cost me to buy and how much fuel it would use , so I really can't complain about costs, perhaps you should trade it in for one of those little cars that do 70mpg and cost far less to buy, bank the left over money and be happy once again LOL

Oh and doing 10k (looks like you will be doing more than this) a year at £1.32 A litre and at an average 30mpg will cost you £1,997.60 in fuel

It's no more than a 210 GT to run though

Quite frankly what an utter load of sh*t.

The car on like for like journeys does virtually the same fuel consumption as a GT, (even both cars remaped)

The servicing costs are no different to a GT, and insurance is prety much the same aswell.

It shows how naive some people are these days when buying cars. The R is the range topping performance version of VWs. They are NOT designed to be economical. If you want that stick to your corsa 1.0s etc.

I'm assuming you're financing it too hence you feel you're being raped. Well petrol costs have been rising steadily for the past year and the VAT increase everyone knew about. Insurance is also well known to be on the up.

All you had to do was budget the costs and see if it adds up to your circumstances. If it doesn't, walk away. It's all very straight forward.

For info I did 15k miles in my first year with the R....and budgeting £300 for fuel per month currently even tho work is only 10 miles away.

Bottom line....if you can't afford to pay, then don't play! No one is forcing you to keep the car. There is always a choice. Bye!

I have to agree with the guys above just not as strongly put. If you walk into a showroom and walk out with a 30 grand car you have to expect high payments and everything else that goes hand in hand with a high value model. Fuel will always be unpredictable over the course of your ownership but you can still do an average of what it might be year on year. Doesn't help that old rubber face gaddafi has had an effect on prices with some reports that fuel in the UK may go as high as £2 a litre. Andy is right in saying it's no harder on fuel than the gt. It will improve slightly over time as it' loosens up but has more to do with a heavy right foot.

In the meantime either enjoy it or sell it but certainly don't continue to own it if everytime you turn the key you think of how much the journey is going to cost.

On another note I think I spotted you around the waterfront recently. I pulled out from the bridge just in front in a White gt. The car looked well.

I would actually disagree with your post on that cos the new engine in the GT is defo more economical and efficient than the older type engine used in the R. I'm averaging 25mpg most of the time...but then I don't drive it like miss daisy contrary to popular belief

Saying that I did note the mpg was seriously worse on way back from the tuner after getting Revo put on. But fook me did it go like stink

There is naff all in it, R perhaps a little bit more to run, but really is nothing. Bear in mind, i've owned both, and had both Revo'd


My 2.0TFSI Quattro A4 is probably worse than the R to run, and its a factory 220bhp map.

At no point did I suggest that I cannot afford to own or run an R. I was only noting how expensive it is to do just that.

Most of the replies certainly have an aura of arrogance, "O me and my performance car & my 50% tax bracket''. If you consider yourself a performance car then I think its time to put all your pennies together and buy a performance car such as a new RS5 or 911 turbo. Further, if you consider yourself so wealthy and a performance car driver....then why or why did you buy a Scirocco R! The scirocco R is a nice car but it is not a performance car.

Please guys, save the arrogance and rubbish for your local R meetings.

Oh so you're an expert on what's a performance car and what's not then? what cars have you driven? Was it a non type R Honda Civic you moved from IIRC?

If you can afford to run it then you wouldn't be moaning about how expensive it is would you.

Y dont you just go and buy that M3 / R35 / 911 Turbo you obviously Say you can afford to own and run then.

No one here has mentioned anything about income/tax bracket. We said we knew what the costs would be when we ordered/bought the car. Something you obviously can't grasp the concept of.

Well good luck in your future performance car ownership then if you think you can just buy a car with out much thinking on the consequences re running costs.

PS: in case you don't understand the concept of what a public forum is, then don't post on one.

Another two pointless posts....what a surprise.

You clearly haven't read my post as I did not suggest that I wanted to part with my R.

GTI...leasing a car does not mean that you cannot afford it nor does it imply that the owner is stuck with it.

To be honest I would have thought an R would be a good compromise between running costs and performance. This is one of the reasons why I chose my R32, 5 years ago as the running costs were reasonable however recent events have made me think twice on the costs of fuel and tax (£425) and as I do a high mileage (20k+) I decided to jump to the dark side and order a diesel Rocco when I decided to replace it and not an R. One of the hardest decision I have ever had to make.
