Hi guys, I'm looking for some re-assurance.

I've driven my R DSG about 300 miles and the car is fantastic but I expected it to be faster. I'm running smoothly on 98RON and I have noticed that if I floor the car it takes a few seconds to take off. I have tried to shift down with the paddles into a lower gear but I still have to wait for about 2 seconds, even in 2nd/3rd gear....then it almost takes off. I wonder if I had a manual would the lag be soooo long....

Is this a normal feature of a turbo or possibly the DSG....I haven't a clue and they why I would like your advice.

BTW i've never driven a car with a turbo setup before.

Its still quite new so dont panic just yet, are you driving in sport mode ?, do you have sport switch on ?, do remember a turbo needs a little time to spool up, and the R has a bigger turbo than say a GT so may have a little more lag.

I'll have to keep an eye out for you Stephen around Belfast, to date I have only noticed the white Agnews demo R on the road. What colour is yours?

On a serious note, the torque curve of the R in OEM spec is flat...so u don't feel that "kick" of the turbo but speed builds in a linear fashion. If you want it to "take off", get it Revo'd and put the boost setting to 9!

I'm not sure about the lag element, as dont know what speed your travellling when you were acclerating etc but it does lag more than the GT I had, but much more torquey.

All I would say is that the Roc disguises speed, so you quite often dont realise the speed has picked up as its quite smooth and tends to thrust forwards rather than jolt forward at each gear change like on a manual, but you'll notice when you drive another 'normal' powered car how much slower it is.

I think also DSG takes getting used to, and you start to expect it to be psychic, but in reality you have to use to manual mode if you want more control tho S will move you forward quickly but revs high so best done when she's run in I would say.

Also - if you're using kick down can take a 'moment' to compute the gear it will choose if maxing the power, so thats a DSG feature...

(However, the only other thing to add, is a fuel starvation issue that some people describe, where they press hard on throtle and get a lull of nothingness for a couple of secs, then full beans, and thats regardless of DSG...)

No matter what car, I find that it is better to press the accelerator down gradually, rather than just stomp on it. There's the fuel starvation thing, then there's the DSG kick down feature, there is the possible turbo lag and then there's the 350 Nm of torque that is put down through the front wheels, which is sure to put the traction control to work, especially if the weather is cold - all of which could be what you are describing.
Even if it feels like a Playstation with the DSG box, it isn't.

I find it depends where you are in the REV range on my mapped GT .. if im under 3000 the turbo hasn't spun up and yes there is a small delay (nice beefy sounding exhaust though). If im over 3500 REVs then just touching the Accelerator will make it go full plums. This is of course based on a warm engine (at least 10 mins of driving). Also like 182_Blue says you are still in the early days of the engine, i think the manual says break it in for the first 1000 miles or something like that ...

It will loosen up as you put the miles on it, remember that down at 1200 - 2200 rpm you really are not on the turbo so will experience turbo lag whilst it spools up.

The dsg box will learn your style over the first 1000 miles to try and guess when you'll want it downshift / upshift.

Thanks for the advice.

I think that my issue is with the DSG box and I'm still learning how to drive the box and the car together. I'm so used to revving to the red line in each gear with my previous manual cars and I have been a bit more careful with this car...its new and its in a different league to my previous Civic Type S.

There is no doubt that its fast and when I learn more about the car and use the paddles/Sport mode a bit more I will fly.

And it's a shame u can't buzz the red line in yours unless you get the DSG Box remap. The auto change at 6400 rpm will happen every time!!

In sport mode it has more than enough revs IMO :-)

He's come from a VTEC...but boost is the future.

I like pinging mine to 7k rpm tho

In light of new evidence from a DSG R owner it seems they can rev to 6800 rpm!!!

But you still can't buzz to 7k rpm tho like a manual

I'm going back for another go tomorrow, I'm sure it was 6900 rpm lol.... think you should look again more closely.

The hesitation you are describing is from the DSG and not turbo related , I have driven Audi's with the same gearbox and suffered the same probs, my Rocco tdi displays exactly the same traits and it can be quite unnerving at times I have found the best way to avoid it is drive in the tiptronic, use the gearlever or the paddles to up or down shift, this appears to take away the decision making from the gearbox as to which gear you will require next.This has been discussed at length on some of the Audi forums.

I gotta be honest and say I've been a bit hamfasted with the paddles in my brand spanking R (pics to follow soon), so can you confirm that with the autochange up and down I cannot do any damage to the car by being a bit rubbish with it??!!

Hi guys,

I've been driving the R DSG for a month now and I've covered just over 1k. At first I was a little disappointed with the power of the car but after learning how to use the DSG and paddle shift I now think that the car is actually too fast for every day use. I like to fire up the motorway but my issue is that its so effortless to reach 70+ speeds (you can add whatever speed you like here!) at times and even at these speeds the car is comfortable.

I don't think this level of power is suitable for the road and for me it teases me to drive faster and fassssssster. I'm not sure if anyone shares my opinion but anyone in a R should try to take it easy from day 1.....

Welcome to the world of performance car ownership and "boooost"

If you think it's too fast already in stock form, then maybe you should have got the GT.

I'm modding mine to give it more boost...and to go faster. But then I'm fully aware of how fast it is already.

You are spot on with the effortless way it gets up to speed... Which is what I said originally.

Yeah Chunster, I think a GT would have been just the right step up from a 140bhp civic.

Infact I was close to ordering a GTI DSG but I was greedy and didn't see the point in not getting an R because it would have always been better than 'my GTI' and I would have always wanted for an R.

I'm happy with my R. I guess it will take me time to learn how to drive it sensibly and when I achieve this I will probably want another boost...maybe an M3 or a 911 turbo if I'm lucky. 3 years time will tell.............this country is in ruins at the minute so maybe I will end up with with a yut in Australia or train/bike combo in New york. Who knows!
