I've had my car since Sept 2009 but as it was a cancelled order I got a massive discount but couldn't choose the options myself. It had everything I wanted but no phone kit. Since the car is on a lease I can't do too much to it so I opted for the Bury bluetooth kit. I have an iPhone 4 so thought I'd write a quick review now I've had it a few days.

The kit cost me £230 which included installation but considering the kit alone is around £160 I didn't think this was too bad. The brochures claim it can be fitted in a few hours but Whiterose VW of Steeton wanted my car for the full day. They gave me a courtesy car so no real complaints there. They asked me where I wanted it so I opted for just infront of the 12v socket and behind the gear lever. That way they only damage the 2 plastic buttons that don't do anything and can be replaced when I hand the car back. Another option would be to have it next to the stereo screen but for me the steering wheel would partly obscure the screen.

The advantage of it being made for VWs is that it integrates nicely with the stereo and you get a nice little startup screen when you turn the ignition!

The kit connected easily with my iPhone 4 and transferred all my contacts over with no problems. I leave my Bluetooth on so as soon as I get in the car the phone connects with the kit. The problem with VW is that they choose the colour scheme for you and there is no option to change it to the other presets once you leave the garage.

I'm not sure why they do this as it seems a little odd but i like the screen as it is. The touch screen works nicely and is easy to use.

The voice control is absolutely fantastic and is really easy to use. There are quite a lot of commands to learn but the basics are enough to get you through and the unit will prompt you for options. This feature can be turned off at a later date when you get used to it which is usefull. The voice dial of numbers and contacts is very easy so making a call means I can keep my eye on the road. You can select 3 ringtones from the kit but only 1 is worth having. The 4th option is to use your phone ringtone which is brilliant as custom ringtones now play through the stereo when a call comes in.

A few issues I have found with my iPhone is that messages cannot be loaded and read out by the Bury kit. I presume this is something to do with the way they are stored on the iPhone. Even if you get a new message whilst they are paired it still does not register. Also there is a music function to stream music from your phone. The kit can pause and play music on my iphone but I can't actually hear anything. I think there is another lead you need to buy to make it work but I'm not too bothered about that. At the moment I use the ipod connector from my stereo as it charges the phone as well.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the Bury kit. The screen detaches from the small base and can be taken with you so low life scumbags don't decide to break in to your car. Phone calls are crystal clear and is works well with the factory fit stereo. I wish it worked a little better with the iPhone in terms of messages but this may be resolved at a later date.

Thanks for the review, I am in a similar position, will be getting my car soon and wanted to buy a bluetoth kit like this rather then add an extra I pay for across the lease and cant sell at the end. Where did you buy it from and where was it installed? You mention it integrates with the Stereo. Does the stereo just go off when you receive/make a call or can you control it form there?

Is this the same one? http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165571" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Seems to be going for £149 with optional £10 installation. (Although I'm sure Halfords wouldn't do a job to the same standard as VW!)

When a call comes in the stereo mutes automatically. The voice then says "incoming call" and either plays your selected ringtone or if you have selected voice control it will then say "accept or reject". You simply reply with whichever one you want and the call will either connect or not. Once the call has finished the stereo goes back to whatever was on (CD/Radio/etc). All the sounds from the kit are played through the cars speakers so its really clear.

I bought and had it installed at my local VW garage.

That's the one but i guarantee you will need an additional wiring harness which will put the cost up. I have no doubt it can be bought and fitted cheaper elsewhere but as my car is a lease car I wanted to be really carefull and go through VW. If it messes anything up at the end of the lease I can say that VW installed it so go and speak with them!!
