dsg or manual for the 160 hp version

Post by hy8mauy »

I have decided to buy the 160 hp (candy white or dark maroon havent decided yet) and havent decided if dsg or manual.

Is the dsg version fast enough? does the manual mode in dsg feel differnet than the automatic mode?

I am afraid of dsg problems as i have read about them...

help...........

tomorrow i have to decide.

thx

I had the same dilema before deciding what to look for in my DTI GT 170 - I would certainly say test drive a dsg as only that will let you know whats right for you and not just a quick spin as it takes a while to get used to it - I drove 3 dsgs on prolonged test drives befor deciding it wasnt for me - it didnt seem to have the urgency of the manual in diesel guise at least but it may have been me - I couldnt do quick starts and just prefered the conventional box, the greater potential for epensive repairs further down the line was also a concern

Really you need to drive them and choose as said above.... i did and was hooked instantly, the performance is always on hand, the gearchanges very smooth and responsive, it never quite stays a 'Full' Manual though, if you're in manual mode using the paddles it will revert to auto mode if you don't shift with the paddles after a little while, it also won't let you hit the rev limit, again it will automatically change up.

I personally think it suits the character of the engine very well - fuel economy will be better, emissions are lower....

I guess it depends a lot on the driving you do, the majority of mine is 300+ mile motorway journeys and stop/start stuff in traffic during rush hour, hence i have little need for a gearbox the majority of the time, i'd rather the car do everything for me!

I've been informed that one of the reasons for the long lead time at the moment is due to supply issues with the revised DSG unit, but there does seem to be a lot of rumour circulating so i'm not going to back that 100% just yet!

I would go for the DSG again, every time. Take the MF steering wheel as an option if its not standard for your spec as that will include the paddles.
Enjoy!
