MPG shock

I decided to be unusually boring yesterday during my usual Monday trip to Heathrom from South Oxfordshire. In my 2.0TSI I managed to get....48.2mpg average! Well happy with that, I have half a tank of petrol left and the trip says I can go another 255 miles on it (not in reality obviously) with 252miles already done on the same tank.

Anyone else got near this or beaten it?

I got to 42mpg in mine averaging about 55mph on a leisurely trip to Bristol just before Xmas.

Normally I'm lucky to see more than 32.

Saw an average of 37 from Stansted airport to New Malden in mine and thought it was incredible, but my figures are put to shame by that. I'll be driving Miss Daisy for weeks now trying to beat that ;)

I have put it on #1 on the MPG reader and seen my current drive around 36 coming home from work. Not driving it "super eco" either.

I find a HUGE way to get this is to not accelerate or brake when leaving a motorway (obv if it's safe), but just let it roll to the red light, or until 20/30 (whatever you can take the exit normally at if it's on green. Also, to let it roll in traffic. It might be annoying to those behind, but stop starting is annoying and drinks fuel. so 2nd / 3rd really helps if you can. I did these coming back from work yesterday and was amazed. If it's a regular journey, you can max MPG without harming most of the driving you usually do.

The whole way I barely touched the throttle, but I was still doing a consistent 60mph. Reading the traffic helped (no fast acceleration, letting the car slow down naturally instead of braking etc) plus I was also following a lorry fairly (safely) closely.

It is dull though, I wont be driving like that every day! Just nice to know what its capable of when you need it.
