Scirocco Central

Hi,

I've had my Scirocco for 6 months now and its time to change the front tyres after 22k.

Currently the car runs Dunlop Sport Maxx's but I just wanted to know if anyone had anything better? I do mainly motorway mileage with the odd bit of a country thrash every now and again.

My alloys are the 19" luguanos.

I find conti's good, but pricey... conti sport contact 3 is what I have on currently!

Cheers for those suggestions. I will look into those. I probably should have mentioned that I want a slow wear rate if possible!

mine are the Bridgestone Potenza RE 050A. stay away from them as they are awful in the wet.

i can't remember who it was but another forum member said the UNiroyal Rainsports are good as well.

ah , make sure you double check if your existing tyres are XL ( extra load) or not.

Getting 22k from the Dunlops is good , well for me it would be, personally I like them and would get them again, depending on finding some at the right price as the 19" are over £200 !

interestingly, when I replaced my Pirelli P-zero Rosso's, with the same, the retailer checked both 91 and 95 ratings (even though I neded 95 according to what is on the car) and the higher rating were £15 per tyre cheaper than the lower. Allegedly due to selling more of the higher rating they work out cheaper!

Just replaced my conti's that virtually evaporated off my wheels with some Michelin PS3 seem good so far!!

the Sport Maxx GT's are hard wearing i have to say...altho I switched my tyres front to back at 7k miles they're still looking good at 14k.

Might switch them round again lol.

Thats cos they are pish tyres

As mentioned before, cant say I agree about the Dunlops wear. I do think they are good in dry though.

Continental Sport Contact 5P's have been top of a few recent reviews, so if your going to spend ~£200 ea, I'd be tempted to try them. Thats what Im planning to do at the moment. May swap front to back for time being though, still got tread on fronts.

Michelin PS2 or PS3's get good rating all round.

I was quite happy with the wear on the Dunlops, with 22k out of the front and 6mm still left on the rears, I have decided to stick with the same. I also got, what I thought, was a good price of £165 per tyre.

As VW now seem to be supplying the 18" Interlagos alloys with Continental Self Sealing Tyres, does anyone know if they are repairable after a puncture ? As I understand it, there is a gel (or something like that) layer inside the tyre that seal the hole upto 5mm in diameter and prevents air escape. However the continental website does state:

"The layer inside the tyres is not designed or intended to act as a permanent puncture repair and while ContiSeal tyres significantly reduce the incidence of flat tyres, unlike runflat tyres they are not designed to be driven under-inflated or in a flat condition."

still dont get why VW still keep shoving dunlops on, they have performed poorly on 3 vags that came with them, someone in vw finance must agree as if you are on smt you'll get contis or pirellis

If the tyre is flat, goes flat or generally has no / little air in it then do not drive on the tyre unless you fancy having to buy a new one. The idea of self sealing is that should you get a puncture the inner gel seals the hole preventing air loss...

The automatic puncture repair may last the life of the tyre or may not. Upon getting a puncture you are supposed to take the tyre to a specialist repairer at the earliest opportunity who can fit a permanent vulcanised plug, however if you get a puncture and never know about it because the tyre self sealed I do not see how you know to take it for permanent repair.

Do you have to swap front to back on same side, or diagonally opposite? Had quick flick through manual and couldnt find anything (was quick though). Cheers

Same side, as they have a set rolling direction.

My car currently has Dunlops on, soon as they need replacing I will be putting Good Year Eagle F1 assymetrics on. Had a set of these on my 07 Audi S3 and they are awsome both in the wet and dry.
As for the self sealing tyres or Runflats ( correct me if i am wrong ) I would not touch them with a barge pole, recently had a BMW with these fitted and they are dreadful, awful ride and grip.One of the reasons I changed the car.
