RNS510 Updating and Experiences

I thought I would share my experience with updating the Nav DVD in the car to version 7.
I downloaded v7 of the disc which is available in various places online (don't want to be told off for putting links here).
Worked well, however I saw pictures of it on some other forum with 7 digit postcode entry. So I wondered why after I installed version 7 of the disc it didn't provide me with 7 digit postcode entry. I then found on another forum that the only way to obtain 7 digit postcode entry is to use the BMW version of Continentals Navigation Disc. I am in the process of downloadin that to see if it is what it says it is...
Now the bit I don't understand, firstly it mentions that some software will only work with -
Warning
None of the V7 DVD's will work with the recently introduced SW versions 380x
The SW versions are intended only for the next generation D-type units
Which I am not sure how to obtain the SW version of the nav in the car, is there a simple method (I don't have VAGCOM)

Hey,
I see loads of people having various problems. The horrible thing is some people know what they're doing and others just need guidance. I'd like to know the answer tot his as I'm looking to update in the future. It's not important right now, but I really want the 7 digit postcode as my current nav will not even find my home.

I have V7 map and it gives me a 7 digit postcode ?, sounds like your disc was just a renamed V6, as for software 380x it works but only on a proper V7 disc, not a modified one with speedcams etc

Where did you obtain the disc from?
Why would a modified disc (not that I have one) make any difference to whether or not 7 digit postcodes would work or not?

The modified discs with speedcams do not work with FW 380x, you need an unmodded V7 map to for it (the map) to work with fw380x, it has nothing to do with the postcodes, 7 digit postcode works on both the modded and unmodded map , well as long as you have a proper V7 map

This is what I read, and it was confusing me - setting this aside about the disc, how do you know what FW version you have?
The press the setup button doesn't work for me, haven't tried the other suggestion yet.

If your secret menu isnt showing you need to activate it via VCDS, do you have access to this ?

No

Oh, well this is what you need to do with VCDS , in module "37 Navigation", then at line 50 change the 0 to a 1 and then save
Ps, for the FW wait for the proper release, the current 380x is a factory version which deletes everything on the HD, the proper version should be more user friendly, but TBH there isnt much new on the latest FW, possibly the biggest difference is the new splash screen

TBH there is nothing on the HD I require as I store no music to it or anything else since I have an IPOD. I tried to get the local dealer to SW update it, we will see if they do it
otherwise I can have it done when it gets serviced in a couple of months.
So just to clarify, I may or may not have the correct unmodified v7 disc, the only way to tell is to update the software first and then try the v7 disc and see what happens?
Where did you obtain your disc?

What happens when you try to enter the postcode ?

You just get the same 5 digit replies you got with v6.1

I took mine to the dealer and they wouldnt update the firmware. Don't think they are under any obligation to, but I dont want to do it in case I brick my unit. They said mine can't go past 2GB also and that my manual is wrong. Great stuff.

That's a bit of a digression about updating an RNS510 with newer software - it depends what you say to the dealer to make them upgrade it.

Are we banned from posting links to the downloads / purchase locations?
I have sourced a guy on eBay but he is only selling the latest firmware with 6.1 maps (which i already have)

No it's nothing to do with me as I don't work here but posting such links could get the site into serious problems so I would say don't post any links.

Ok so here is my updated experience - yes you can download the torrented RNS 510 software v7 from the internet and it will work with 7 digit postcodes and other upgrades so long as you also update your firmware to your device.
My device previously was firmware 2660 and now has 2720, firmware information can be obtained here -

I had the dealer take a look at it for something else and just asked him to tell me when he plugged it in - it is ideal that you note your firmware first before attempting to upgrade just to know where you started from.
