I forget which may I was looking at in Teskies the other night but it was like a What Car type one with all marques / models split by category... small car, hatch, hot hatch, saloon, family cars, sports cars etc
Anyway I was looking for a review on the Roc & looked in hot hatch 1st.... Golf R32 / GTI present & correct but no Roc.... Hmmmm I thought & turned to the Hatch section.... still nothing.... then I found it in the Sports section along with the big boys Cracking writeup by the way
Got me thinking.... how do you classify the roc... sports car or hot hatch ?

I personally class it as a hatch, but it is marketed as a coupe'

yeah, a really nice hot hatch (in the modern sense of the word, it ain't no old school flyweight). Agueably a bit of both though, hot hatch/ sports coupe mix. Feels more special than a hot hatch to me though, and gets more attention. I'm glad of the extra practicality but don't really need a 5 door or a huge boot or anything so it's an ideal compromise for me.
edit; it might be more accurate to consider it a sports car actually, since it's a purpose built shell, albeit based on an existing hatch platform and other hardware, whereas a hothatch is traditionally a more driver focused version of an existing hatch back.
Wish someone told me it was a hot hatch before I went and spend 27k on one...
I really do not (and neither do any of the car magazines) consider it a hot hatch.
And what other hot hatch do you know with doors as wide as the roc's?
Its not a hot hatch, it would have had to be a normal hatchback first for that, and its not practicle as a hatchback, its a coupe. its not really a sports car either ( thats a catch all term anyway ), but its more that than a hatch.

Indeed, I was going to mention that.
I do not know of any hot hatch that is not a sporty version of a standard hatch.
I am suprised by the number of "hot hatch" votes...
But isn't the 2.0GT a hot version of the 1.4 ?
Just playing devils advocate
Although I voted hot hatch I really think there's no comparable model to the Roc & that it's unique.. it's not an out & out sports coupe, neither is it a true hatch... it's just very very special
Guys it comes with 1.4 and diesel variants also generally speaking it would be rear wheel drive so I wouldnt claim it was a sports car for those reasons, you could call it a coupe as it's only available in a 3 door and the windows are frameless, but the boot on the car opens like a hatch? hence why I'd call it a hatch back, its fatser to 60 than 8 seconds so on that basis it would be in the hot hatch category on performance.
Its a muddle of them both but its not a coupe because how the boot opens but it does have features with the doors etc I cant say I'm really bothered, I just drive the thing
But if you guys wanted to know how arrived at my choice its because it has a hatch opening for the boot, its front engine and front wheel drive, shares the same platform as the golf and has peformance figures which are the same too

Also just a quick question, why would you be bothered if it was classed as a hot hatch does it mean its less of a car ? I cant tell the difference between the Roc and the Civic Type-R that also has a high boot line, 3 doors and and lower variants of engine and spec!

Its not a hot hatch, because theres no cool version of it!! all engines came out at roughly the same time, its a coupe, deal with it.. Hot hatches are souped up versions of existing family hatchback cars, thats how the whole thing came about, thats why the Mk6 golf GTI doesnt come out at the same time as the normal golf, all manufactuers are the same.
p.s. lots of other cars come with a hatchback, doesnt mean their in the hatchback class!!

We'll agree to differ, I dont have to deal with it! Its a hatchback the boot is a hatch, a sports coupe looks like the pic below , the rooco is a lovely car my god though would you care if it was classed as a tractor it doesnt make something better because of what category its in, it wont make it a better car. Also I beg to differ on the souped up version theory, I think you'll find a Type-R has a completely different engine, suspension etc and Honda spend several million in the development as do other car manafacturers.
Each to their own, opinions are like arseholes we all have them

I don't care how people classify it... to me it's very very special & unique... I only posted the thread to show how there are differing opinions in car mags on what section it goes into

I honestly can't think of a comparable car.
Totally agree 100% Its just a difference of opinion, and I also think there is a mix of both, I only class it as hot hatch, because of the platform, boot opening (Hatch) and the price, yes 27k was a lot but most hot hatches at the high end of the market ask that these days albeit recession will change that
