Wiring your Sat-Nav (TomTom) in

Post by caprinolaw »

I am having my TomTom wired into the ignition next week so that i dont need to worry about having to plug the cigarette charger in everytime i use it.

However i am very conscious that i dont want the lead constantly sat on my dash in view of all when its not in use.

I did consider the same approach Trix has taken with her phone but down by the gear lever is too low for me so thats a no go.

I was considering having it wired through the mini "glove-box" below the ignition on the drivers side so that i could store it in there and just pull it up through when i need it.

Has anyone else had this done and if so where did you have it put. Anyone else got any better ideas?
Jay.

Mine is mounted in the centre cubby using the cigarette lighter, the same as Trix has her smartphone. I fixed a TomTom mounting plate on the roof of the cubby and use the window suction mount to hold my GO730. Ignition off and the cigarette lighter isn't live so no issues about battery drain.

I have my Road Angel mounted by the right pillar. I was able to feed the wires around and underneath the steering wheel (Just above the pedals, and then into cigrette slot. You never know the wires were they (Unless I unplug the device, it leaves a stand!)

Thats where I used to have mine mounted works perfectly and is very discreet.

Just out of interest, does the TomTom fit nicely in the "mini" glove box (I havent tried that)? If so, could you keep the TomTom in there and just open the glove box when you want to use it, and route the power lead as mike-p suggested?

I had a go at what i thought would work best with me and came up with the following:

On Monday i am just having the lead wired into the ignition via the cubby so it free's up the cigarette lighter and i dont have to run the lead across the steering column.

(PS. Its a TomTom GO720)

Behind the cubbyhole is the main fuse box. Buy a trailing cigar socket and wire it straight in to one the spare live terminals in the fuse box. There' a handy earthing point there too. A socket should only cost you £3 - 4.
