38.000 euros

I wrote a "little" review
Intro
With an absolutely personal design, the Scirocco third series, in line with the parent, born from the Giorgetto Giugiaro’s skillful pencil, crosses the stylistic structure to which the home of Wolfsburg has traditionally been faithful, creating an unique within its own diversified range of models. Confirmation that the German coupe falls within the segment, recently reinvigorated, of the exclusive cars, is evidenced by the small number of cars, sold since its first market, which occurred in October two years ago.

“R” Presentation
If the standard version was a huge success at the most famous car magazines and at the hardcore purists, the “R”, acronym for "Racing", has a center in the heart of many fans of sports cars: it is not the case that the “hot” version was created by the “Racing division", recently born with the intent to customize and improve the performances of the VW brand’s cars: that division has wisely made a facelift, designed to make, rather there was need, the line of the car even more dynamic and appealing.

Design
Interventions focused on the larger front bumper that has undergone a particular process of "camber" and "grilling" at the end of which, like jewels were embedded two strings of LEDs in order to give that touch of elegance that distinguishes the top models of the German group. The rear bumper, on the contrary, it is simply enriched by a newly designed rear spoiler, dominated by the chrome split exhaust that suggests to the viewer a thrilling sound. Probably not so happy, was the grafting of side skirts which appeared as "stuck" in post-production. However, in this make-up, all things considered, well done, a distinctive sign couldn’t miss: well, in addition to the multiple "R" stamped on each side of the body, the something of which I speak is undoubtedly represented by beautiful alloy wheels, star style, called "Talladega" by the generous diameter of 19 inches (optional on the cost of 639 euros) . The choice to “wear” in such a beauty (the alloy wheels), the high-performance tires, the Potenza RE050A, the top of Bridgestone, was very apt (right).

Interior
-The cockpit is not fully convincing, not because of the quality of materials and assembly, completely in line with the standards of the mark, as the excessive simplicity of design: from sporty car, which is “R” , one would expect a unique end exclusive interior. But the dashboard is only a copy of that of Eos, the only subtle differences are represented by the glossy black details that frame the air vents and the beautiful and functional touch screen of RNS 510 unit, and brushed aluminum strips marked with the ubiquitous "R".

-However, there are some elements which, fortunately, “contaminate” this austerity: the wheel of small diameter and sporty design seems to communicate to the lucky pilot the full power of the car. Behind it, stands a "lid" which incorporates a rather simple instrument, consisting of two large dials, rev counter and speedometer within which are included indicators of coolant temperature and fuel level. At the center stands the large display that provides a wealth of information of the onboard computer in white on black background. Very pleasant is the blue color of the pointers of the tools with the gem of the “check”, performed at every start up.

-Somewhat disappointing results from the type of seats, rather simple: if we exclude the presence of the marking "R" on the headrests and the Alcantara/ fabric covering, seat model is really identical to the standard Scirocco. To distinguish the R version, the wonderful Recaro seats, available on the Golf R, would be suitable. Nevertheless, the seats have a sporty shape: the seat is carefully designed to meet the most demanding customers who love to drive down with folded arms, in order to control and take advantage the reactions of the car on track. Also effective is the lateral support which holds the bust of the good driver who, if necessary, can prop himself on the alluminium door sill, well-made as well as the pedals, with well-spaced controls. In this regard, the tip-heeled lovers may be disappointed because this the tip-heeld is uncomfortable in certain circumstances, because of imperfect alignment between accelerator and brake, whose position may be too high.

On the road
The Scirocco R with its beautiful design might suggest that it’s only a beautiful object to look ecstatic, sipping a coffee at the bar. Instead, in a pretty dress surely lurks a monster that only a rather belligerent insane driver (see "crazy") is able to tame.

-It’s all the “fault” of the engine, the award-winning 2.0 TSI that, with a power of 265 hp at 6000 rpm and a torque of 350nm, constant between 2500 and 5000 rpm, ensures maximum performances: the House declares a 0-100, covered in 6 seconds for the model with manual transmission and 5.8 seconds with the deservedly celebrated the DSG; the maximum speed could not be self-limited to 250 mph, not to annoy the competitors. Unlike the smaller 160-hp 1.4 TSI, whose delivery (engine) fully linear has not met several holders, the elder brother is very rewarding: the turbo’s input, which works at the considerable pressure of 1.2 bar, is very noticeable, especially, the "loading" starts around 2500 rpm beyond which the pressure becomes very dense as that in low gear is joined to the seat back and neck undergoes a strong backlash whenever, in full acceleration, engages the next gear. Breathtaking is the progression that extends with a constant tension even after the 5000 revolutions, till beyond the maximum power, interrupted only by the limiter, set at 7000 rpm.

-Despite that, unlike other models (Golf and S3 R), the Scirocco R is exclusively front-wheel drive, high torque is discharged to the ground almost always optimal: only in the first two or three gears, as it is obvious, the Asr is on, especially on slippery surfaces, but his intervention seems providential and not invasive, as the XDS, the electronic differential, which gripped the wheel with low traction, severely limits understeer, allowing to follow the ideal line in the corners.

-The undeniable engine’s exuberance and power are effectively kept at bay by a very powerful brakes: 345mm ventilated discs at the front, entwined by monobloc calipers with 4 pistons, and 310mm at the rear, with traditional floating calipers. This braking system, as well as the extreme power, is notable for the extraordinary scalability, also favored by the excellent feeling transmitted by the brake pedal: in essence, it’is a command that offers maximum deceleration when it is abused. In addition, on the road it provides a respectable resistance to fading, although it should be noted, many magazines have found that on track the braking system breaks down after a few laps.

-However, the clearest surprise was the nice attitude: the great distance between the tire and wheel could lead to the belief in a system too soft for a car like that. But, once aboard, it immediately shows that the structure is very stiff and doesn’t digest the road’s bumps very well; for this reason there is jumping very often on the seats. It is the price to be paid for have a sporty car. It has a responsiveness that you don’t expect from a car that weighs 1400 kg: it dances rapidly between the curves, the directions changes are sudden and trajectories can be set easily with great precision, thanks to the excellent steering wheel that features a servo-assistance really well calibrated that always guarantees the right load and that makes it very communicative.

-Mainly responsible for the reactivity of the frame is, without doubt, the rear that nicely the Esp leaves very free, especially in “sport mode” and, therefore, the rear very often, if properly led (caused), expands outward, thus promoting the entry and cornering, everything always manageable, for the more experts, with throttle and steering wheel. Moreover, this pleasant behavior, which is jumping for joy the lovers of extreme driving, absolutely does not affect driving safety: even at high speeds the Scirocco R remains stable and never shows “windings” and dangeruous fluctuations, even under strong braking.

-We could not escape from hearing of the experts the "music" that is orchestrated by the brilliant large-diameter chrome exhaust that emits a "baritone" sound rather deep at low speeds and at the same time, a sound, to remain in metaphor, by mezzo-soprano, as the tachometer needle points to the red zone.

-To square the circle lacks only a gear transmission by 10 but in my opinion it has "only" an 8 because it has an excessive travel of the lever and it doesn’t seem to be fast. On the contrary, it is soft enough for everyday driving, showing a degree of roughness only at cold.

-In relation to the benefits offered by the type of car, fuel consumption is relatively low: in city, with a relaxed drive you get the mileage of 8.5 km/l; on the extra-urban driving, with a particularly diligent drive, also 15km/l, using high gears at low rpm, a speed never exceeding 80 km/h. Obviously, those who buy a car like that, does not pay close attention to the problem of consumption that, in the guide particularly engaged, fall sharply, reaching even the 4/5 km/l.
