Finally getting my car delivered on Friday (YAY!) and I am wondering what the deal is with modifying a car purchased with PCP?

Assuming a sliding scale from window tints to engine remap, etc. What can I get away with and do I have to ask the finance company first?

Read the terms of your contract.

Im on PCP and my contract states absolutely no mods without written permission.

If you have servicing included as part of your PCP then you also need to be very careful that nothing you do voids the terms of this and more importantly your warrantly.

No matter what mods you get permission to make (if any) you will be expected to return the car in the same state it was delivered (less fair wear and tear).

In Short : you probably need written permission for every mod you make.

so if you do don't be tempted to sell any stock bits you will have to refit them so be prepared to fill your shed/garage/attic with stock bits

Depending on the terms of the agreement the bits you take off may not be yours to sell

Unfortunately I know of someone who learnt the hard way of modding a S3 which went pop

I've just reminded myself of the terms in my PCP deal through VW finance and there isn't any mention of modifications being an issue or that you have to return the vehicle in the same state as you bought it. Just that it is in a kept in good repair and condition.

Whether they see the modification of the car as it not being in good repair or condition is another matter, but I guess that could be argued upon case by case.

Either way, I intend to keep mine after my PCP deal is up or sell it myself, so I'm not all that bothered by it.

I asked my dealer about this a few weeks back and he told me there was no problem. Actually seemed surprised I asked!

Official answer from my dealer was "ask your finance company, they own it".

that sounds about right to me!

To be honest the bottom line is, as long as you return it in the same state that you received it then there's no issue. So mod it if you like but take it back to stock before you hand it back.

My last car was a fleet vehicle, I modified all the audio gear, but put it all back to standard bar taking off the sound deadening before returning it

wow didn't think VW would be ok with modding a PCP car.

so if I want to remap my 122 or something I can?

The best thing anyone can do is ring the FINANCE company - NOT the dealer!

I think the 122 can be taken to circa 150ps

Again, not sure I would have the nads:D I overclock PC's so understand pushing things and over engineering, but blowing up a 20k motor is far scarier than my £1000 PC!
