SD card

I have the satnav media unit and have just wasted money on a sdhc 4gb card that isn't compatible. Please someone that has actually got a working card confirm what I should be buying. It looks like anything under 2gb and only sd not sdhc cards but some are micro cards and others only look like you can use them in a camera. Had the car a year and only just getting around to this - how bad is that?

You need a card that says "SD" - not SDHC.
If You update the firmware (dependent on what HW you have) then it will eat SDHC...

You're better off going with a USB stick. I have both and the usb loads so much faster than the sd card.

Forgive my girlie ignorance but where exactly would I put it? The aux jack and ipod jack's won't work with a USB stick???????

In mine it's under the centre armrest. I've 2 leads in there, 1 for the iPod and 1 for a USB connection (which I've never used!)

as Ian says, the ipod connection is a separate lead plugged into the mdi, you should have received one of these with a usb connection on the other end (may be in the glove box)
if you remove the ipod lead from the mdi connection in the armrest & plug in the usb lead you can plug a usb key with music on into that

Hi Both

I have the iPod lead but have never used it cause I've got another mp3 so I use the aux lead. It doesn't look like it will fit a USB stick though - too big? Can you load to the HDD from the USB? I want to use the HDD 'cause then once music's on, it's on. Seems a shame to have such technology and not use it and the sound quality isn't that great on the aux lead with mp3, compared to a cd. I am not a technophobe, just very ignorant so forgive me.

from my experience of mp3s, the quality depends on the source and who you 'share' from. How big is your HDD? I find a big capacity USB better because you can hide it inside the armrest and whatever happens to the car, the USB will only loose copied files. I store my downloads in a seperate home HD.

I'm sure I read that you can only copy from the SD card and CD's to the HDD. There's probably some wonderful reason for this but your guess is as good as mine

To try and pull it all together for you, with several good replies above ...
1. Your RNS unit will not work with SDHC cards (i.e. bigger that 2GB I think). THe RCD unit will work with SDHC cards.
2. There is a firmware update for your RNS unit which will allow it to use SDHC cards but to install that you need to load it up on a SD card (grrrr..)
3. Music using the headphone output from your mp3 player will normally being a bit poorer quality. You'll get better from an SD card or via the media input (inside the arm rest). Or via the in built hard drive.
4. A USB stick gives much quicker performance than the SD card slot, but probably not as fast as the integral hard drive.

Thank you everyone. Me thinks Volkswagon haven't really thought about this one properly. It would be a damn sight easier if you could just rip from cd to HDD. Looks like I'm either buying a 2gb sd card and messing around transfering music from that or sticking with my Sony mp3 into the aux lead. Technology!!!!!

Do you not have a MDI to USB lead aswell as iPod lead?

Can then buy a big capacity USB stick and quality should be better thru the MDI plug.

I thought that to get music onto the HDD you do put CDs in and copy it over?

Nope, I only got the iPod lead. If you use USB can you see the tracks on the touch screen?

I WISH you could rip from cd to the HDD but no! Pants!

Yes you can - you get artists, albums, tracks and you control it all via the touch screen.

i got both leads thrown in for free when i got my R. (thrown in, should have come with it as STANDARD equipment considering how much the car was lol)

EDIT: They're around £25+VAT maybe from VW.

You should get both leads supplied with the car. If not, go back to your dealer and ask for it. This has been discussed many times before so you could try a search if you need more info.

This may be suitable, but just check first!

I think this is it:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-SEAT-SKODA-MED ... 27b2ddcb27" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

but a bit expensive. There was one on for 99p but I was outbid with 30 seconds to go.
